Reportage artwork for Refugee Women of Bristol
Don protégé
I'll soon be illustrating at my fourth Refugee Women of Bristol dance event, a yearly gathering of women seeking sanctuary, playing music from their country and encouraging everyone to join in and dance. It's such a joyous event, and I love being involved.
No cameras are allowed in order to protect anonymity, so I go along with my paints and sketchbook. The charity has previously used these images on social media, and during Covid they helped to secure the RWoB some amazing coverage by the BBC. I also turned the colourful watercolour paintings into a fundraising calendar.
I haven't charged the charity a fee for this work previously and they don't have the budget to pay me this year, and so I'd like to raise an appropriate fee that represents me going to the event and creating artwork, scanning / editing and then licensing the work to Refugee Women of Bristol so that they can use it for their social media and press.
Please note I will still go ahead and do this project if I don't attract any donations, but I'm hopeful that those with the means may decide to offer some money into the pot. If I can start crowdfunding for work such as this, then I will be able to devote more time to it in future. At the moment it has to take second place to commissioned work that pays my bills.
If I raise money over the required amount I will put this to other projects - please see an example here of my illustration of the Sarah Everard vigil .
