An event in isolation is only part of what happened ... In a major enhancement to the Janes events dataset, global military events have been verified and interconnected with multiple foundational data points, including systems and weapons, organisations, inventories, orders of battle, and installations. Using Janes military events data, our experts have identified the number of Chinese aircraft and warships detected around Taiwan between November 2023 and February 2024. The interconnections between the events data and Janes foundational OSINT enabled the quick identification of the capabilities and roles of the aircraft and warships involved. Further links to Janes orders of battle – used to locate home bases – provided insights into whether the aircraft and warships were likely to have been forward-deployed. Analysts were able to track patterns and trends in the tempo of the incursions and involvement of different aircraft or warships over time. Janes unique ability to interconnect key datasets helps analysts to quickly derive the insights that support decision making. Janes is the only OSINT provider that delivers an in-depth understanding of who is involved, why it is happening, and what the likely outcomes might be, supporting analysts as they look for indicators and warnings and carry out pattern-of-life analysis. We are looking forward to attending the Special Operational Forces (SOF) Week 2024 in Tampa, Florida ,6-10 May. During the event, the Janes team will demonstrate how we support special operational forces, through an examination of Chinese incursions over Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) using Janes Intara, our proprietary data model. By connecting Janes data, which is the largest collection of defense and security open-source intelligence available, with SOF’s proprietary and third party data within Janes Intara, we create a structure to the data sources and enable critical analysis, faster. Janes has the largest collection of validated interconnected intelligence on the world’s defence and military equipment. Our military analyst James Rands spoke to The New York Times about ‘Ukraine’s Race to Hold the Line’. Rands specifically spoke about three topics – ammunition, manpower, and an assessment of Ukraine’s defensive fortification plans. Link to the interactive article in comments.

In this podcast, Janes senior analyst James Trigg joins Harry Kemsley and Sean Corbett to discuss Libya. Historic civil and political unrest have made it a country of interest globally for decades. While other conflicts and world events have forced countries to switch their focus, Libya remains a country which requires attention particularly for countries in Southern Europe and the Middle East. They discuss how open-source analysis can help plug the gap in understanding when attention is focused elsewhere and how using Janes tradecraft with a long-term view, provides a more balanced understanding of the stability, impact, and influence that Libya has in the region and beyond. An event in isolation is only part of what happened ... In a major enhancement to the Janes events dataset, global military events worldwide have been verified and interconnected with multiple foundational data points, including systems and weapons, organisations, inventories, orders of battle, and installations. Using Janes military events data, our experts uncovered that between November 2023 and February 2024, Japanese surveillance patrols detected 19 Chinese and seven Russian vessels. In the same period, F-15s were scrambled 21 times in response to airspace violations. The interconnections between the events data and Janes foundational OSINT enabled the quick identification of the vessels’ capabilities and roles and aircraft involved. Further links to Janes orders of battle, to locate home bases, provided insight into whether they were likely to have been forward-deployed. Patterns and trends in the tempo and locations of the activity and involvement of different vessels and aircraft over time could also be tracked. Janes unique ability to interconnect key datasets enables analysts to quickly derive the insights that support decision-making. Janes is the only OSINT provider that delivers an in-depth understanding of who is involved, why it is happening, and what the likely outcomes might be, supporting analysts as they look for indicators and warnings and carry out pattern-of-life analysis.
