Making communications work for everyone
About us
Ofcom is the UK's communications regulator. We make sure people get the best from their home phone and mobile services, as well as keeping an eye on TV, radio and on-demand content. We also ensure people don’t get scammed and are protected from bad practice. We also oversee the universal postal service, and the airwaves used by wireless devices. Right now, technology is changing how people work, interact and enjoy themselves. Much of our work is focused on making sure everybody has access to the communications technology they need and that competition can thrive.

🚨 Ahead of the next General Election, we're sending a clear warning to broadcasters to maintain the highest standards of impartiality - particularly those who use politicians as presenters. Today we've published qualitative research to explore audiences’ expectations of due impartiality. We found that: 📰 Audiences welcome existing restrictions preventing politicians from presenting news content. 🎙️ Views on politicians presenting current affairs programmes are mixed, but while there are concerns, there's no clear consensus for an outright ban. ⚖️ Due impartiality is strongly valued by audiences in news programming. 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dqbm_C_E #Broadcast #Politics #TV

These findings are extremely concerning. Under the Online Safety Act, tech firms will have to assess the risk of illegal content circulating on their services, take steps to stop it appearing and act quickly to remove it when they become aware. Once the new rules are in force, we’ll have strong enforcement powers to ensure they’re held accountable for the safety of their users.
🚀 Our awaited #BehindTheScreens Annual Report launches today with the latest figures on the global trends in combatting the distribution of child sexual abuse imagery online. ⚠️ The 'most extreme year on record’ sees three to six year olds being targeted and groomed or coerced into sexual activities via webcams by ‘opportunistic’ predators. This is the first time the IWF has recorded and published an entire year’s data on self-generated imagery featuring children this young. # Every instance found was #hashed – a process where the image is assigned a digital fingerprint – and added to the IWF’s Hash List which is distributed to technology companies to prevent the upload, sharing and storage of this imagery on their services. More than 200 companies globally partner with IWF to disrupt and stop child sexual abuse imagery online. Find out more at https://bit.ly/3QCKQRF and share with your networks.

Just launched – the NEW DRCF AI and Digital Hub will support innovation and enable economic growth The DRCF has today launched an ambitious multi-agency informal advice service, which will offer access to four regulators – the Competition and Markets Authority, Financial Conduct Authority, Information Commissioner's Office and Ofcom. The DRCF AI and Digital Hub pilot will offer innovators free, informal advice on queries that cross more than one DRCF regulator’s remit. The Hub will give you a joint response rather than having to approach each one separately. Go to our website at https://www.drcf.org.uk/ for full details and to submit a query. #AIandDigHub #DRCF #AI #innovation

They found that catching the attention of consumers has more impact than simply promoting benefits such as savings or quality.
