We think outside the box to create authentic and innovative lighting designs that enhance our experiences, cherish our cultural heritage, and work in harmony with nature. In our new video series ‘Outside the Box’ we deliver a mystery box to Florence Lam, Arup Fellow. Exploring each object inside the box, Florence shows us how lighting design is about more than casting light into darkness – light and shade together make up the perception and meanings of space, whether imbuing a sense of nostalgia and wonder within historic heritage sites or creating a safe and inclusive urban night-time environment in harmony with nature. Florence’s work on the Acropolis Museum exemplifies our approach to daylighting and heritage lighting design – using light to create a meaningful narrative which places historic artefacts, archaeology and Greek heritage at the heart of the story from day to night As an Arup Fellow, Florence L. inspires and enables our people to be creative and innovative in their work, bringing a deep commitment to delivering excellence for our clients. How can urban mobility infrastructure benefit the community around it? Galway’s Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge, an elegant three-span steel arch bridge spanning 55 metres, improves safety, accessibility and provides a new public space for leisure and a focal point for tourists. Flared approach spans integrate the bridge with the quays, drawing over 10,000 pedestrians and cyclists daily towards the river crossing. Working closely with Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe / Galway City Council, Seán Harrington Architects and Brady Shipman Martin, we provided a comprehensive range of services including structural bridge design, planning, environmental, geotechnical, health and safety and landscape architecture.
