This Sunday is International Labour Organization's World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2024, exploring the impacts of climate change on occupational safety and health. The ramifications of a changing climate are clearly present in our daily lives, in our conversations and on the news. Our Chair, Jerome Frost, reflects on what these shifts mean and how we must all adapt the way we design to create safer and more resilient outcomes for people around the world. #WeAreArup
The uncertain and often destructive weather patterns we’re experiencing mean that we must adapt the way we design to create a safer and more resilient environment for people around the world. Safety is inclusion, and at Arup, we’re taking an integrated approach to design, bringing together the built environment, transport, and the energy sectors in our work, with safety and social equity at its core. Climate change is a profound challenge for all of us, and I believe that now is the time for us to come together, with our clients and partners, to think through these challenges and create a safer world. #WorldSafetyDay2024 #WeAreArup International Labour Organization

Yesterday I had the privilege of participating in this thought-provoking panel discussion on "Attracting and retaining global talent" organised by Financial Times, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and The Stepstone Group with the amazing Auma Obama, Sebastian Dettmers and Ekkehard Ernst. We talked about how identifying and developing future skills, digital/tech capabilities, a learning culture and global mobility are integral to navigating lifelong and fulfilling careers that support people and businesses to be productive and grow. #WeAreArup #FutureSkills #Sustainability #Innovation https://lnkd.in/ePkfdQsn

The Christie Paterson Building is a £150m Medical & Cancer Research Facility at the heart of The Christie campus in Manchester, UK. A collaboration between three medical leaders; The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, The University of Manchester & Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the project brings together cancer researchers and clinicians into one building. The Christie Paterson Building is the largest single-site cancer research facility in Europe and one of the leading research centres in the world. We provided multi-disciplinary engineering design services drawing on our depth of experience in science, healthcare and workplaces to create a facility of global significance in the research and treatment of cancer. The water crisis is one of the greatest humanitarian challenges we face today. The #builtenvironment is responsible for 15% of freshwater use with urbanisation increasing this demand. This poses an immense challenge, but also a huge opportunity. Implementing Circular Water practices can help reduce water footprints and tap into lost value streams thereby generating economic, social and environmental benefits. Hear from the Arup team about practical pathways towards implementing circular water economy principles across the built environment. Panel session Dr. S. At 73 metres tall, Amsterdam’s timber-hybrid tower HAUT is an iconic addition to the city’s skyline. Sitting on the banks of the river Amstel, it stands as one of the tallest timber-hybrid residential buildings in the world. Boasting a BREEAM Outstanding label both for design as well as construction, HAUT demonstrates that high-rise residential buildings can be built sustainably without compromising functionality, flexibility and architecture. In the quest for sustainable urban development, Staterra, our new toolkit, can be a game-changer for city planners and policymakers. This innovative active travel modelling tool processes vast data points to illustrate the complexity of preference in people’s movement, revealing not just the most direct paths but also the routes people truly prefer. With Staterra, we can gauge the pulse of our cities by assessing the quality of roads and pathways, pinpointing high-demand areas, and analysing footfall dispersion near key amenities. Staterra’s ability to consume large datasets in building and interpreting networks is essential for planning our sustainable cities of tomorrow. The healthy cities of the future require a mixed-mode approach, and to get more people walking, wheeling, and cycling, we must understand their needs and preferences and design our cities accordingly. There’s no better day than #EarthDay to put the spotlight on the Knepp Wildlife Carbon project. Rewilding at the Knepp Estate since 2003 has proven to deliver huge biodiversity benefits, including supporting the return of priority UK bird and butterfly species such as nightingales and the purple emperor butterfly. It has also demonstrated carbon sequestration rates of a similar magnitude to those estimated for a newly planted native woodland when using the Woodland Carbon Code. This landmark report from Knepp Estate, Arup and Nattergal Ltd illustrates the additional climate change mitigation benefits of rewilding and how it presents an alternative investable climate solution.
