The world’s largest police organization, INTERPOL’s mission is to assist law enforcement agencies in each of its 196 member countries to combat all forms of transnational crime. Guided by four core functions, INTERPOL provides a high-tech infrastructure of technical and operational support to enable police forces around the world to meet the growing challenges of crime in the 21st century. The General Secretariat in Lyon, France, is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing a central contact point for the National Central Bureau (NCB) in every member country for assistance or information on cross-border investigations. All NCBs are connected to each other and the General Secretariat through I-24/7, INTERPOL’s secure global police communications system, which also enables law enforcement officers to directly check a range of vital police databases. INTERPOL uses a system of colour-coded international notices to locate, arrest or provide warnings about fugitives and other criminals.

The first-ever INTERPOL border screening activity in Tonga has resulted in 83 positive hits related to stolen and lost documents, as well as persons of interest. Known as Project Blue Pacific the landmark operation involved enhanced border screening activities in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga, utilizing INTERPOL Mobile Devices and I-Batch, a data processing application, to conduct searches against INTERPOL databases. The operation aimed to reinforce the screening of travelers ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders' Meeting, the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police Conference, and Pope Francis' visit to Papua New Guinea. The hits included 44 in the Stolen and Lost Travel Documents Database and 39 in the Nominal Database, which enables the identification of movements of persons of interest and internationally wanted individuals across the Pacific region. Investigations are ongoing.

INTERPOL’s Americas Regional Conference has ended with a call for enhanced cooperation against the multiple threats posed by organized crime networks and the associated increase in violence. The meeting concluded with recommendations for strengthened activity to: - protect vulnerable communities from human trafficking, migrant smuggling and crimes against children - fight drug trafficking and organized crime - address the rise in all forms of environmental crime, such as illegal mining, fisheries, forestry and wildlife crime, and - tackle vehicle crime as it increasingly converges with other criminality including trafficking in all forms, money laundering and corruption. Senior police officials also underlined the increased use of INTERPOL’s Notices system to identify, locate and arrest members of criminal gangs as crucial to disrupting organized crime networks, and identifying potential links with terrorism. https://lnkd.in/er2gku99
