About us
Founded at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations is an international organization made up of 193 Member States committed to maintaining international peace and security. Every day the UN works to tackle global challenges and deliver results for those most in need. Giving life-saving support to populations hit by humanitarian crises, helping build and keep the peace in conflict-ridden areas, supporting governments and their citizens to advance development and fight poverty, and promoting human rights worldwide are the core pillars of the work of the United Nations and the mandates it receives from its Member States. “Under international humanitarian law, civilians must be protected – and they must be able to receive the essentials they need to survive, including food, shelter, and health care,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres stresses. “A major obstacle to distributing aid across Gaza is the lack of security for humanitarians and the people we serve. Humanitarian convoys, facilities and personnel, and the people in need, must not be targets.” The Secretary-General again calls on the Israeli authorities to allow and facilitate safe, rapid and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid and humanitarian workers, including UNRWA, throughout Gaza. https://lnkd.in/eHSZPibx

Three decades ago, the Commission on Population and Development stressed that human rights must be at the heart of population and development matters. This landmark affirmation led to positive impacts around the world on education, healthcare outcomes, mortality rates, living standards and more. Yet, further efforts are needed to ensure no one is left behind. See how the Commission’s 57th session, which is underway at UNHQ in NYC, seeks to carry progress forward: https://lnkd.in/dER8qMPs

Renewable energy is key for a healthier planet and a better future for all. We need to end our reliance on fossil fuels and invest in alternative sources of energy that are clean, accessible, affordable, sustainable, and reliable. Renewable energy sources – which are available in abundance all around us, provided by the sun, wind, water, waste, and heat from the Earth – are replenished by nature and emit little to no greenhouse gases or pollutants into the air. Let’s ride the wave to a world powered by renewables. The future thanks you. #ClimateAction #ActNow #GlobalGoals

The climate crisis is placing people at risk of severe health hazards across a range of occupations. Workers around the globe find themselves at an increased risk of exposure to excessive heat, ultraviolet radiation, extreme weather events, air pollution, vector-borne diseases and agrochemicals. Ensuring safe and healthy work environments is critical. More from the International Labour Organization on Sunday’s World Day for Safety & Health at Work: https://lnkd.in/g5zbRKdy

Immunization has saved over six lives every minute of every day for the last 50 years. It is one of humanity’s greatest achievements. But there is still work to do. We’ve eradicated smallpox —we must do the same to malaria, polio, cervical cancer and more. And there are still places where people don’t have access to vaccines. Nobody should suffer from a disease we know how to prevent. It’s time for immunization for all. https://lnkd.in/ddhpG5g
