How can the humanitarian sector unlock the full potential of local knowledge? By putting local actors in the lead within international development and humanitarian action and learning at the centre. Front-runners and bright minds came together for an inspiring ALNAP (the global network for humanitarian learning) event, featuring humanitarians based all over the world for opinion, debate, networking and video. In the first session of the Learning Curve event, Sarah Abdelatif co-hosted a sofa conversation with sophia swithern (Independent Consultant) and Mihir Bhatt (Director of All India Disaster Mitigation Institute) with input from Charles Kojo Vandyck, Head of Capacity Development at West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), Saeed Ullah Khan (Director at GLOW Consultants). Here are some insights from the panel [07:04 - 31.34]: ⏭ “We must embrace a new paradigm. One that prioritises collaboration over competition, impact over growth, innovation over risk aversion, learning over the illusion of perfection. We need to foster a culture where sharing knowledge, including our mistakes is valued and encouraged. This requires a fundamental shift in how we define success.” Charles Kojo Vandyk ⏭ “It’s also about thinking differently and more openly about what we’re trying to ask. […] I think all the tools and solutions are out there to enable us. […] We need to get new paradigms into general practice.” Sophia Swithern ⏭ “Be the learner you want others to be. The system-wide impact would be much larger and far more concrete and sustainable.” Mihir Bhatt ⏭ “There are no local voices in the decision making and then there is the “expert phenomena”. Whatever you do, say and write is considered right and that comes at the cost of local knowledge. The solution is simple. Reverse everything. Give the resources to local actors. Give technical expertise to local actors. […] Local actors can also be right.” Saeed Ullah Khan Catch all the conversations here: https://lnkd.in/dG9WUyBs What resonates with you?
