💧 With climate change intensifying weather patterns, floods are becoming a more common and devastating threat. According to news reports recently, the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) in 🇳🇬 Nigeria reported 179 people have died as a result of the floods in Nigeria, while tens of thousands have been displaced from their homes. Moreover, nearly 107,000 hectares of farmland have been destroyed, which could mean a shortage of food increasing the already high food prices. Unfortunately, Nigeria isn't the only country experiencing destructive floods, 🇾🇪 Yemen in the past month has recorded at least 97 people over the past month, according United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). "When individuals affected by humanitarian crises are at the centre of interventions and evaluations, it is imperative that no one is left behind. However, the specific needs of people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions are often ignored or silenced in humanitarian responses, and for this very reason require special attention," writes Cristina de Nicolás Izquierdo. 🖋️ In this commentary, Cristina shares her thoughts about what ALNAP's upcoming #OECDDAC criteria guidance should take into account after participating in our validation workshop in June. She continues to state that the gender-diverse approach can help humanitarian organisations avoid perpetuating power imbalances and discrimination, and ensure equitable inclusion and treatment of all affected individuals. The upcoming new ALNAP #OECDDAC criteria guidance for evaluating humanitarian action is scheduled for release in 2025 and you can find more information about what we have done so far: https://bit.ly/4dp0p8H 📖 Read Cristina's commentary: https://bit.ly/4dN5gAu 📹 Watch event recording: https://bit.ly/3Myx6oc

"It is increasingly common that extreme heat causes weather-related deaths, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities, outdoor workers, and the urban poor," according to the latest https://bit.ly/4e6WzRo's issue. The All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI)'s (https://bit.ly/4e6WzRo's) latest edition examines "Extreme Heat Adaptation and Mitigation Programming: Lessons from Affected Populations." Protecting communities from extreme heat requires proactive measures. South Asia is experiencing a rise in extreme heat events as a result of climate change, which poses significant health and socio-economic risks to vulnerable populations. Topics covered include urban planning for reducing heat islands, community resilience strategies, and the role of local governance. Furthermore, it identifies successful interventions and policies from South Asia, emphasising the need for regional solutions tailor-made for the region. You can read or download the issue here: https://bit.ly/3MslqU3 Visit ALNAP's dedicated Heatwaves page for more resources and lessons learned: https://bit.ly/3WYAX42

💡 What does the humanitarian sector look like in a world based on learning❓ In challenging times for the humanitarian sector, it’s more important than ever that we capitalise on the wealth of learning and experience that already exists within the system. Sometimes it’s as important to learn from what didn’t happen, or what might have happened if things were different. 📹 Watch The Learning Curve event to find out what all our panelists think about humanitarian learning: https://bit.ly/4cCaIF7 This event explored: ➡️ Unlocking the full potential of local knowledge for wider learning ➡️ Why institutional ego and the competitive funding environment stop agencies from sharing learning collectively ➡️ Organisational learning cultures - what would good look like? #withlearningcomeschange #TBT

📑 Learning from the past to develop better roadmaps 🛣️ 🗞️ On 26 August, the @World Health Organization (WHO) launched a global Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan as part of its efforts to prevent outbreaks of human-to-human transmission of #mpox after a 😷 public health emergency of international concern was declared by the Director-General on 14 August. It is not uncommon for #humanitarian responses to repeat mistakes and fail to take advantage of the lessons learned in the past. Here you can find 📚 resources specific to COVID-19 that humanitarians can take advantage of learning from the most recent health-related crisis: https://bit.ly/3Ms13WZ These resources can be used to develop strategies to better address the current public-health emergency. Additionally, they can be used to identify gaps in existing response plans and develop more effective solutions. #withlearningcomeschange

📯 Evaluators need protection‼️ Last week, the key theme of the 🌐 #worldhumanitarianday was a call to observe universally accepted international laws to regulate the conduct of armed conflict and limit its impact. In 2023, a record number of #humanitarian workers deaths were reported and it is expected more deaths this year. The frontline workers aren't the only ones in need of protection. Additionally evaluators do need protection to be embedded into mechanisms to minimise the risk factors as they do their work. 🖋️ In this latest commentary by Amra Lee titled, "Addressing protection in humanitarian evaluations: what ALNAP ’s new guidance needs to achieve" shares, she highlights why adding protection into the updated #OCEDDAC criteria guidance currently in progress is critical.
