Drug-resistant infections know no borders 💊 That’s why, this Thursday, a UN High-Level Meeting will take place to address the global issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The Lancet Group has a long history of publishing the latest research and commentaries on the growing #AMR threat. - A recent study suggested more than 39 million deaths from antibiotic-resistant infections could occur between now and 2050. - But interventions exist already. Effective and consistent application of infection prevention methods could save 750,000 lives a year, according to a Lancet Series (see infographics). - Ultimately, a combination of interventions is needed, such as minimising inappropriate antibiotic use and research into new antibiotics. Much rests on the outcome of the meeting on September 26. However, “The political declaration that emanates...will be judged by how its recommendations are implemented, not by the words on the page”, states an Editorial in The Lancet. bit.ly/4d8RnMh All links in the comments ⤵️
About us
The Lancet began as an independent, international weekly general medical journal founded in 1823 by Thomas Wakley. Since its first issue (Oct 5, 1823), the journal has strived to make science widely available so that medicine can serve and transform society, and positively impact the lives of people. Over the past two centuries, The Lancet has sought to address urgent topics in our society, initiate debate, put science into context, and influence decision makers around the world. The Lancet has evolved as a family of journals but retains at its core the belief that medicine must serve society, that knowledge must transform society, that the best science must lead to better lives. 🆕 “Experts call for public health approach to suicide prevention, with social factors addressed in addition to clinical treatment services” According to WHO, over 700,000 lives were lost to suicide in 2019, equating to 1,925 per day, or one every 45 seconds. A new six-paper Series in The Lancet Public Health advocates a change in narrative; from presenting suicide as a purely mental health issue to also acknowledging the impact of social factors. These include: - Poverty - Debt - Addictions - Homelessness - Abuse - Discrimination - Social isolation “This Series demonstrates that addressing these more upstream factors is likely to lead to sizeable reductions in suicide rates. We are calling on governments from around the world to take a ‘suicide prevention in all policies’ approach”, says co-author, Prof Jane Pirkis. hubs.li/Q02Ph9dF0 Figure 1: A public health model showing how suicide arises Figure 2: Preventing suicide under the public health model #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
