A New Daenerys

Those of you who read Mo Ryan's blog for the CHICAGO TRIBUNE will already have heard the news: http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2010/05/game-of-thrones-hbo.html

Yes, the role of Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO series of GAME OF THRONES has been recast.

Our new Daenerys is a beautiful and talented young actress named Emilia Clarke, a recent graduate of Drama Centre London. You can learn more about her here:

http://www.spotlight.com/7655-7861-0395

I haven't had the chance to meet Emilia yet, but I've seen her auditions. She gave some kickass readings, winning out over some amazing competition from all around the world. She should make a great Dany.

(None of which should be taken in any way as a slight against Tamzin Merchant, another wonderful young actress. Her perfomance as Dany in the pilot was wonderful, I thought).

Can someone explain, or point me to a post if its already been answered, why so many/all the roles need to be recast for the regular series?

There's no clear-cut information, although a source at HBO stated that the change to Michelle Fairley was more some behind-the-scenes tweaking of emphasis or direction than anything.

Recasting of parts -- even major parts -- is pretty common in Hollywood between the pilot and regular series stage.

Great news!
Thanks for the update, Mr Martin.
This is great news!
She is a beautiful woman who, I am sure, will do us all proud.

Hooray!
I am so excited about Emilia Clarke. All I've seen of her are some commercials she did for Samaritans, but even in those I could see her talent come through. This is great news for Game of Thrones!

Wow
She's pretty.

And if you think she did kickass in the auditions George, then I'm not gonna disagree! Bring on the series!

Great news. The announcement came a little sooner than we expected, but that's a good thing! Hopefully they'll start trickling in over the next few weeks now.

Aw, what a shame Tamzin Merchant left. But Emilia Clarke looks like a great fit. Her limpid, lucid eyes and full lips fit the mental image I've always had of Dany.

It's good to see new blood in the cast. Hope this launches a great career for her.

about that pilot... will it ever be released to the rest of the world or do we only get to see the final project?

I was just going to say that maybe you should let us take a look at the pilot so we can judge for ourselves, but it's been done for me :)
I'm sure it will work out the way it should ion the end, and I'm sure New Dany will be brilliant.

George..will these be 1 hour episodes? And, do you feel that they will be able to capture 'A Game Of Thrones' in 10 hours?

Good Call
No offense to Tamzin Merchant, but Emilia Clarke looks more like I envision Daenerys, especially as she evolves as a character.

concerns
I have a few concerns. I noticed in the profile you provided that it lists the the actress' phone number and address. I'm hoping these aren't her home address and private number?

Re: concerns
That's her agent's business address and phone number. Hint: there aren't any young actresses living in the W1T postcode district, which is a fantastically expensive area.

I'm surprised by the comments that New Dany looks more the part than Old Dany! New Dany looks rather old for Dany IMO (though perhaps HBO wants the screen character to be older than she is in the books?), and while she is lovely, she doesn't look like her colouring would take well to the platinum blonde hair. Perhaps it's just these particular photos, though.

I'll be interested to see it when it finally comes out, anyway.

Any idea when the show will finally air? I've already subscribed to HBO in preparation. :p

The new actress is several years younger than Tamzin Merchant, I believe.

According to the head of HBO's drama programming a few months back, they envisage airing GAME OF THRONES alongside TREME, which would probably mean an April 2011 airing, maybe May.

Reading Dreamsongs....
I'm looking forward to the series. But I am reading dreamsongs volume 1 right now, just finished Second Kind of Loneliness and it was INTENSE. could really feel the character. I couldn't stop reading it if someone broke into my house it was that good.

pod cast
Mr. Martin have you considered making some pod casts? or maybe having your own channel? I for one would love to be able to down load all things George R.R. Martin (does'nt really matter what it is) from book updates, book readings, book signings, book sales, movies, art, HBO cast updates, miniatures, everyday life... ect. please consider this venue. I have a zune but may be getting an Ipad in the future. Sorry for being off subject.

Honestly, No. I disagree.
Of course, neither HBO nor GRRM cares what I think. But Emilia Clarke isn't fine-boned enough for this role. Her cheese are too flat. Obviously her hair will be dyed. But overall her face is too broad. I am disappointed in HBO today.

Re: Honestly, No. I disagree.
Be reasonable. You can't possibly tell whether somebody is right for a role purely on the basis of what their facial bones look like (or on the basis of the flatness of dairy products for that matter ;) ). There'll be writers, producers, studio execs, casting agents and the like in the decision, all of whom do this sort of thing for a living, and will no doubt have experience of the industry, and in depth knowledge of the plans for the series. I can't help thinking that between them they know what they're doing - let's not be criticising people before we've actually seen them, as their characters, on screen.

I'm sure Emilia will be fine but I think Tamzin had that otherworldly "blood of the dragon" look about her that I always thought was integral to Daenerys' character.

She's gorgeous. If her acting performances are as good as she looks, she has my full confidence.

Thank you for the headnews. I liked the old version (well I can only speak for looks, obviously), but this one looks even better. SHe has splendid eyes :) Hope it'll be a good recast and that she will perform well as Dany :)

For some reason I always pictured Daenerys with a rounder face than either of these girls - I'm not sure if that's supported by the books or if I just made it up. Emilia does look a bit more like I pictured Dany than Tamzin - beyond that I know nothing about her, but I hope she does well.

Hmmmm can't say I can understand this change. I too thought Tamzin looked more appropriately 'otherwordly' and young .... oh well.

She is beautiful and really close to how I pictured Daenerys, especially after checking out the Samaritan ad, so for me personally this re-cast has been a hit :))) (nothing at all against Tamzin Merchant, she's lovely and a great actress but imho not so fit to command an army)
