In order to investigate the hydrodynamic performances of semi-submersible type floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), particularly the effect of body-wave-current interaction, the OC4 FOWT is considered in the presence of co-existing regular wave and uniform current fields. The wind loads are not considered at this stage. The problem is treated in the framework of potential-flow theory in the frequency domain, assuming waves of small steepness, and the solution is obtained by using a perturbation expansion method for the diffraction potential with respect to the normalized current speed. Analytical and numerical formulations have been used to treat the inhomogeneous free-surface boundary condition involved in the hydrodynamic problem formulation for the derivation of the associated perturbation potential. The hydrodynamic loads were obtained after evaluating the pressure field around the multi-body configuration using three different computer codes. The results from the three computer codes compare very well with each other and with the numerical predictions of other investigators. Finally, the mean second-order drift forces are calculated by superposing their zero-current values with the corresponding current-dependent first-order corrections, with the latter being evaluated using a ‘heuristic’ approach. Post-traumatic cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (ptCVST) often remains underdiagnosed due to the non-specific nature of clinical signs, commonly mimicking severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) manifestations. Early recognition of this rare and potentially life-threatening complication is crucial for the effective management of severe TBI patients in Intensive Care. The present study reports the case of a 66-year-old male who was transferred to the emergency department due to moderate TBI. Initial emergency brain computed tomography (CT) scans revealed certain traumatic lesions, not necessitating any urgent neurosurgical intervention. During his stay in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), multiple transient episodes of intracranial pressure (ICP) values were managed conservatively, and through placement of an external ventricular drain. Following a series of CT scans, there was a continuous improvement of the initial traumatic hemorrhagic findings despite his worsening clinical condition. This paradox raised suspicion for ptCVST, and a brain CT venography (CTV) was carried out, which showed venous sinus thrombosis close to a concomitant skull fracture. Therapeutic anticoagulant treatment was administered. The patient was discharged with an excellent neurological status. To date, there are no clearly defined guidelines for medical and/or surgical management of patients presenting with ptCVST. Therapy is mainly based on intracranial hypertension control and the maintenance of normal cerebral perfusion pressure (CCP) in the ICU. The mismatch between clinical and imaging findings in patients with TBI and certain risk factors raises the suspicion of ptCVST. Full article

The left displacement of the abomasum (LDA) is a common condition in dairy cows that can significantly impact their welfare, productivity, and fertility. This study was carried out in Greek dairy farms over a period of 3 years. To ensure early detection, the farmers were trained to accurately identify the disease. The reproductive performance and milk production of 306 cows was assessed by considering the time to the first estrus, the calving-to-conception interval, and the number of artificial inseminations required for the establishment of pregnancy. Uterine health status, the timing of disease diagnosis, and the season of the year were also evaluated. In a separate study, the outcomes of 26 cases where cows suffered LDA and underwent surgical treatment with a delay of at least one week from disease onset, were compared to those of cases promptly treated. The results indicate that even early identification and treatment of LDA affects fertility and milk yield; these impacts worsen with the co-existence of uterine infections of affected. However, in late-treated cases, all reproductive and production indices show significant deterioration. Our findings suggest that timely diagnosis of the disease, preferably by the farmer, ensures minimal losses in cows affected by LDA. Full article

Assessing air quality in urban areas is vital for protecting public health, and low-cost sensor networks help quantify the population’s exposure to harmful pollutants effectively. This paper introduces an innovative method to calibrate air-quality sensor networks by combining CFD modeling with dependable AQ measurements. The developed CFD model is used to simulate traffic-related PM10 dispersion in a 1.6 × 2 km2 urban area. Hourly simulations are conducted, and the resulting concentrations are cross-validated against high-quality measurements. By offering detailed 3D information at a micro-scale, the CFD model enables the creation of concentration maps at sensor locations. Through regression analysis, relationships between low-cost sensor (LCS) readings and modeled outcomes are established and used for network calibration. The study demonstrates the methodology’s capability to provide aid to low-cost devices during a representative 24 h period. The precision of a CFD model can also guide optimal sensor placement based on prevailing meteorological and emission scenarios and refine existing networks for more accurate urban air quality representation. The usage of cost-effective air quality networks, high-quality monitoring stations, and high-resolution air quality modeling combines the strengths of both top-down and bottom-up approaches for air quality assessment. Therefore, the work demonstrated plays a significant role in providing reliable pollutant monitoring and supporting the assessment of environmental policies, aiming to address health issues related to urban air pollution. The isle of Gavdos, and its wider area, is one of the few places worldwide where the calibration and validation of altimetric satellites has been carried out during the last, more than, two decades using dedicated techniques at sea and on land. The sea-surface calibration employed for the determination of the bias in the satellite altimeter’s sea-surface height relies on the use of a gravimetric geoid in collocation with data from tide gauges, permanent global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers, as well as meteorological and oceanographic sensors. Hence, a high-accuracy and high-resolution gravimetric geoid model in the vicinity of Gavdos and its surrounding area is of vital importance. The existence of such a geoid model resides in the availability of reliable, in terms of accuracy, and dense, in terms of spatial resolution, gravity data. The isle of Gavdos presents varying topographic characteristics with heights larger than 400 m within small spatial distances of ~7 km. The small size of the island and the significant bathymetric variations in its surrounding marine regions make the determination of the gravity field and the geoid a challenging task. Given the above, the objective of the present work was two-fold. First, to collect new land gravity data over the isle of Gavdos in order to complete the existing database and cover parts of the island where voids existed. Relative gravity campaigns have been designed to cover as homogenously as possible the entire island of Gavdos and especially areas where the topographic gradient is large. The second focus was on the determination of a high-resolution, 1×1, and high-accuracy gravimetric geoid for the wider Gavdos area, which will support activities on the determination of the absolute altimetric bias. The relative gravity campaigns have been designed and carried out employing a CG5 relative gravity meter along with geodetic grade GNSS receivers to determine the geodetic position of the acquired observations. Geoid determination has been based on the newly acquired and historical gravity data, GNSS/Leveling observations, and topography and bathymetry databases for the region. The modeling was based on the well-known remove–compute–restore (RCR) method, employing least-squares collocation (LSC) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) methods for the evaluation of the Stokes’ integral. Modeling of the long wavelength contribution has been based on EIGEN6c4 and XGM2019e global geopotential models (GGMs), while for the contribution of the topography, the residual terrain model correction has been employed using both the classical, space domain, and spectral approaches. From the results achieved, the final geoid model accuracy reached the ±1–3 cm level, while in terms of the absolute differences to the GNSS/Leveling data per baseline length, 28.4% of the differences were below the 1cmSij [km] level and 55.2% below the 2cmSij [km]. The latter improved drastically to 52.8% and 81.1%, respectively, after deterministic fit to GNSS/Leveling data, while in terms of the relative differences, the final geoid reaches relative uncertainties of 11.58 ppm (±1.2 cm) for baselines as short as 0–10 km, which improves to 10.63 ppm (±1.1 cm) after the fit. Agricultural activities produce large quantities of organic byproducts and waste rich in lignocellulosic materials, which are not sufficiently utilized. In this study, alternative agricultural waste products, namely, spent mushroom substrate (SMS) from the cultivation of edible Pleurotus ostreatus mushrooms and the roots of leafy vegetables from hydroponic cultivation (HRL), were evaluated for their potential to be used as substrates for the cultivation of Pleurotus citrinopileatus and their effects on the quality, the nutritional value, the chemical properties (lipid, protein, carbohydrate, ash, fatty acid and carbohydrate composition) and the bioactive content (total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity) of produced mushrooms. SMS and HRL (in different ratios with and without additives) and wheat straw with additives (WS—control) were used. During incubation, the linear growth rate of the mycelium (Kr, mm/day) was measured and used for screening. Mushroom cultivation took place in bags, where several characteristics were examined: earliness (duration between the day of substrate inoculation and the day of first harvest) and biological efficiency (B.E. %, the ratio of the weight of fresh mushrooms produced per dry weight of the substrate × 100). Furthermore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of the protein extract (PE) and carbohydrate extract (CE) of P. citrinopileatus after in vitro digestion (fraction less than 3kDa: PE-DP-3; digestate fraction: CE-D, respectively) on the expression of antioxidant-related genes in the THP-1 cell line. The results showed that mushrooms grown on SMS 50%-HRL 40% had the fastest growth (6.1 mm/d) and the highest protein and lipid contents (34.7% d.w.; 5.1% d.w.). The highest B.E. (73.5%), total carbohydrate (65.7%) and total phenolic compound (60.2 mg GAE/g d.w.) values were recorded on the control substrate. Antioxidant activity was observed in all extracts; the total flavonoid content was low in the samples, and the maximum total triterpene value was detected in SMS 80%-HRL 20% (9.8 mg UA/g d.w.). In all mushrooms, linoleic acid (C18:2) was the main fatty acid (above 60%), and fructose was the dominant individual saccharide. In the investigation of the regulation pathway, NFE2L2 gene expression was upregulated only in the SMS 60%-HRL 40% intervention during incubation with CE-D samples. Additionally, the transcription levels of antioxidant-related genes, SOD1, CAT, HMOX1 and GSR, were increased in the SMS 60–30% intervention. Compared to WS, the alternative substrates are observed to trigger a pathway concerning CE that may resist oxidative stress. This study supports the utilization of agricultural byproducts through sustainable and environmentally friendly practices while simultaneously producing high-value-added products such as mushrooms. Therefore, alternative substrates, particularly those containing HRL, could serve as natural sources of antioxidant potential. Full article

Enablers of and Barriers to Perinatal Mental Healthcare Access and Healthcare Provision for Refugee and Asylum-Seeking Women in the WHO European Region: A Scoping Review

Perinatal mental health is a growing public health concern. Refugee and asylum-seeking women are particularly susceptible to experiencing perinatal mental illness and may encounter a range of challenges in accessing healthcare. This scoping review sought to identify the enablers of and barriers to healthcare access and healthcare provision for refugee and asylum-seeking women experiencing perinatal mental illness in the WHO European Region. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews was applied. Nine databases and six grey literature sources were initially searched in April 2022, and an updated search was completed in July 2023. The search identified 16,130 records, and after the removal of duplicates and the screening process, 18 sources of evidence were included in this review. A data extraction table was used to extract significant information from each individual source of evidence, which was then mapped to the seven dimensions of the candidacy framework. Empirical (n = 14; 77.8%) and non-empirical (n = 4; 22.2%) sources of evidence were included. The literature originated from seven countries within the WHO European Region, including the United Kingdom (n = 9; 50%), Germany (n = 3; 16.7%), Denmark (n = 2; 11.2%), Norway (n = 1; 5.6%), Greece (n = 1; 5.6%), Sweden (n = 1; 5.6%), and Switzerland (n = 1; 5.6%). The results indicate that, although enablers and barriers were apparent throughout the seven dimensions of candidacy, barriers and impeding factors were more frequently reported. There was also a notable overall lack of reported enablers at the system level. Unaddressed language barriers and lack of attention to the diversity in culturally informed perceptions of perinatal mental illness were the main barriers at the individual level (micro-level) to identifying candidacy, navigating healthcare systems, and asserting the need for care. The lack of culturally appropriate alignment of healthcare services was the key organizational (meso-level) barrier identified. The wider structural and political contexts (macro-level factors), such as lack of funding for consultation time, focus on Western diagnostic and management criteria, and lack of services that adequately respond to the needs of refugee and asylum-seeking women, negatively influenced the operating conditions and wider production of candidacy. It can be concluded that there are multilevel and interconnected complexities influencing access to and provision of perinatal mental healthcare for refugee and asylum-seeking women. Full article

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies have revolutionised the field of haematological malignancies by achieving impressive remission rates in patients with highly refractory haematological malignancies, improving overall survival. To date, six commercial anti-CD19 and anti-BCMA CAR T-cell products have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of relapsed/refractory B-cell haematological malignancies and multiple myeloma. The indications for CAR T-cell therapies are gradually expanding, with these therapies being investigated in a variety of diseases, including non-malignant ones. Despite the great success, there are several challenges surrounding CAR T-cell therapies, such as non-durable responses and high-grade toxicities. In addition, a new safety concern was added by the FDA on 28 November 2023 following reports of T-cell malignancies in patients previously treated with either anti-CD19 or anti-BCMA autologous CAR T-cell therapies both in clinical trials and in the real-world setting. Since then, several reports have been published presenting the incidence and analysing the risks of other secondary malignancies after CAR T-cell therapies. In this opinion article, the current landscape of secondary malignancies after CAR T-cell therapies is presented, along with a proposed strategy for future research aiming at potentially diminishing or abrogating the risk of developing secondary malignancies after CAR T-cell therapies. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a supplement rich in ω-3 and ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and antioxidant vitamins on physical performance and body composition following a period of high-intensity functional training (HIFT). Nineteen healthy young adults (nine males, ten females) underwent an 8-week HIFT program (3 days·week−1) where they were randomized 1:1 into either the supplement group (SG)—n = 10, receiving a 20 mL daily dose of a dietary cocktail formula (Neuroaspis™ PLP10) containing a mixture of ω-3 and ω-6 PUFAs (12,150 mg), vitamin A (0.6 mg), vitamin E (22 mg), and γ-tocopherol (760 mg)—or the placebo group (PG)—n = 9, receiving a 20 mL daily dose of virgin olive oil. Body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, and muscle endurance were assessed before and after the training period. Body mass did not change, but muscle mass increased by 1.7 ± 1.9% or 0.40 ± 0.53 kg in the SG (p = 0.021) and decreased by 1.2 ± 1.6% or 0.28 ± 0.43 kg (p = 0.097) in the PG, compared with baseline. VO2max, vertical jump, squat 1RM, bench press 1RM, and muscle endurance increased similarly in both groups. The effects of HIFT on physical performance parameters, muscle damage, and inflammation indices were not affected by the supplementation. In conclusion, HIFT combined with high doses of ω-3 and ω-6 PUFAs and antioxidant vitamins resulted in a small but significant increase in muscle mass and fat reduction compared with HIFT alone. Abstract: Aging is a fundamental biological process characterized by a progressive decline in physiological functions and an increased susceptibility to diseases. Understanding aging at the molecular level is crucial for developing interventions that could delay or reverse its effects. This review explores the integration of machine learning (ML) with multi-omics technologies—including genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and metabolomics—in studying the molecular hallmarks of aging to develop personalized medicine interventions. These hallmarks include genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, disabled macroautophagy, deregulated nutrient sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, altered intercellular communication, chronic inflammation, and dysbiosis. Using ML to analyze big and complex datasets helps uncover detailed molecular interactions and pathways that play a role in aging. The advances of ML can facilitate the discovery of biomarkers and therapeutic targets, offering insights into personalized anti-aging strategies. With these developments, the future points toward a better understanding of the aging process, aiming ultimately to promote healthy aging and extend life expectancy. Full article

Electric vehicles (EVs) are pivotal in addressing the escalating environmental crisis. While EV drivetrains excel compared to those of vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICEs), their energy storage systems are hampered by limited range, lifespan, and lengthy charging times. Hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) present a viable current solution to these issues. This review thoroughly explores the state of the art in the emerging field of multisource EVs that utilize HESSs, incorporating any combination of batteries (BTs), supercapacitors (SCs), flywheels (FWs), fuel cells (FCs), and/or transmotors. In addition, the paper systematically categorizes and evaluates different hybrid configurations, detailing potential topologies and their respective advantages and limitations. Moreover, the paper examines diverse control algorithms used to manage these complex systems, focusing on their effectiveness and operational efficiency. By identifying current research gaps and technological challenges, this study aims to delineate future research directions that could enhance the deployment and optimization of multisource EVs, thereby addressing critical challenges such as energy density, system reliability, and cost-effectiveness. This study summarizes the most recent findings on osmotic dehydration, a crucial step in food preservation. The many benefits of osmotic dehydration are listed, including longer shelf life and preserved nutritional value. Mass transfer dynamics, which are critical to understanding osmotic dehydration, are explored alongside mathematical models essential for comprehending this process. The effect of osmotic agents and process parameters on efficacy, such as temperature, agitation and osmotic agent concentration, is closely examined. Pre-treatment techniques are emphasized in order to improve process effectiveness and product quality. The increasing demand for sustainability is a critical factor driving research into eco-friendly osmotic agents, waste valorization, and energy-efficient methods. The review also provides practical insights into process optimization and discusses the energy consumption and viability of osmotic dehydration compared to other drying methods. Future applications and improvements are highlighted, making it an invaluable tool for the food industry. Full article

The quality and authenticity of milk are of paramount importance. Cow milk is more allergenic and less nutritious than ewe, goat, or donkey milk, which are often adulterated with cow milk due to their seasonal availability and higher prices. In this work, a silicon photonic dipstick sensor accommodating two U-shaped Mach–Zehnder Interferometers (MZIs) was employed for the label-free detection of the adulteration of ewe, goat, and donkey milk with cow milk. One of the two MZIs of the chip was modified with bovine κ-casein, while the other was modified with bovine serum albumin to serve as a blank. All assay steps were performed by immersion of the chip side where the MZIs are positioned into the reagent solutions, leading to a photonic dipstick immunosensor. Thus, the chip was first immersed in a mixture of milk with anti-bovine κ-casein antibody and then in a secondary antibody solution for signal enhancement. A limit of detection of 0.05% v/v cow milk in ewe, goat, or donkey milk was achieved in 12 min using a 50-times diluted sample. This fast, sensitive, and simple assay, without the need for sample pre-processing, microfluidics, or pumps, makes the developed sensor ideal for the detection of milk adulteration at the point of need. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation method that has been suggested as a possible treatment method for cognitive impairment in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease (pwAD), similar to multidomain cognitive training (CT). The effectiveness, however, of combining these techniques for pwAD remains controversial due to the variability in rTMS parameters, differences in CT protocol designs—many of which neglect the language domain—and the inclusion of patients at various stages of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and with different types of dementia. The current review aims to evaluate the cognitive benefits of combining rTMS with CT, including language training, for individuals with mild to moderate AD. An extensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Library with relevant terms, resulting in nine studies with a total of 290 participants [190 in the Active Group (AG) and 100 in the Control Group (CG)]. The comprehensive review of the articles revealed that the combined treatment improved global cognitive function, as well as neurocognitive, neuropsychiatric, and quality of life in the AG. Nevertheless, these results should be interpreted cautiously, given the relatively small number of existing studies on this specific combination. Full article
