Intraocular Lens Power Calculation Formulas in Children—A Systematic Review

Objectives: The selection of an appropriate formula for intraocular lens power calculation is crucial in phacoemulsification, particularly in pediatric patients. The most commonly used formulas are described and their accuracy evaluated in this study. Methods: This review includes papers evaluating the accuracy of intraocular lens power calculation formulas for children’s eyes published from 2019–2024. The articles were identified by a literature search of medical and other databases (Pubmed/MEDLINE, Crossref, Google Scholar) using the combination of the following key words: “IOL power calculation formula”, “pediatric cataract”, “congenital cataract”, “pediatric intraocular lens implantation”, “lens power estimation”, “IOL power selection”, “phacoemulsification”, “Hoffer Q”, “Holladay 1”, “SRK/T”, “Barrett Universal II”, “Hill-RBF”, and “Kane”. A total of 14 of the most recent peer-reviewed papers in English with the maximum sample sizes and the greatest number of compared formulas were considered. Results: The outcomes of mean absolute error and percentage of predictions within ±0.5 D and ±1.0 D were used to assess the accuracy of the formulas. In terms of MAE, Hoffer Q yielded the best result most often, just ahead of SRK/T and Barrett Universal II, which, together with Holladay 1, most often yielded the second-best outcomes. Considering patients with PE within ±1.0 D, Barrett Universal II most often gave the best results and Holladay 1 most often gave the second-best. Conclusions: Barrett Universal II seems to be the most accurate formula for intraocular lens calculation for children’s eyes. Very good postoperative outcomes can also be achieved using the Holladay 1 formula. However, there is still no agreement in terms of formula choice. Full article

Not long after the Colonia Copia Felix Munatia Lugdunum, in present day Lyon, France, was founded in 43 BCE by Lucius Munantius Plancus on the 300 m high Fourvière hill overlooking the Saone and Rhône rivers and the plains to the north and east, it became the capital of the Gallia provinces, growing to be with some 50,000 inhabitants the largest town in Gaul. In the early days, the colonia on the west valleys surrounded Fourvière hill and depended on local springs, wells, and rain cisterns for its water provision, which soon became insufficient for the growing city. A first aqueduct was constructed in 20 BCE, bringing waters from a spring some 10 km north of the town. In the decades to follow, another three aqueducts were added. All of the aqueducts were equipped with one or more pressure lines and installations of (inverted) siphons, totaling nine, to cross valleys that were thought too deep or too wide for a bridge. Today, the Métropole de Lyon counts over a million inhabitants; it is after Paris and Marseille the third largest town in France. Since 1998, Lyon has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, among others, because of the historic architecture in its urban settlements over 2000 years of age. This manuscript recounts the history and present remains of the four aqueducts and their nine extraordinary siphons, and is dedicated to Dr. Jean Burdy, who, with his team over many years of research of earlier literature and of investigations and discoveries of the physical remains of valley sites, produced a great number of publications saving the Lyon aqueducts from oblivion and leading to restorations in recent times. A Consensus-Based Likert–LMBP Model for Evaluating the Earthquake Resistance of Existing Buildings

Almost every year, earthquakes threaten many lives, so not only do developing countries suffer negative effects from earthquakes on their economies but also developed ones that lose significant economic resources, suffer massive fatalities, and have to suspend businesses and occupancy. Existing buildings in earthquake-prone areas need structural safety assessments or seismic vulnerability assessments. It is crucial to assess earthquake damage before an earthquake to prevent further losses, and to assess building damage after an earthquake to aid emergency responders. Many models do not take into account the surveyor’s subjectivity, which causes observational vagueness and uncertainty. Additionally, a lack of experience or knowledge, engineering errors, and inconspicuous parameters could affect the assessment. Thus, a consensus-based Likert–LMBP (the Levenberg–Marquardt backpropagation algorithm) model was developed to rapidly assess the seismic performance of buildings based on post-earthquake visual images in the devastating Kahramanmaraş earthquake, which occurred on 6 February 2023 and had magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 and severely affected 11 districts in Türkiye. Vulnerability variables for buildings are assessed using linguistic variables on a five-point Likert scale based on expert consensus values derived from post-earthquake visual images. The building vulnerability parameters required for the proposed model are determined as the top hill–slope effect, weak story effect, soft story effect, short column effect, plan irregularity, pounding effect, heavy overhang effect, number of stories, construction year, structural system state, and apparent building quality. Structural analyses categorized buildings as no damage, slight damage, moderate damage, or severe damage/collapse. Training the model resulted in quite good performance (mse = 7.26306 × 10−5). Based on the statistical analysis of the entire data set, the mean and the standard deviation of the errors were 0.00068 and 0.00852, respectively. Full article

In the framework of an ongoing gene conservation programme in the Tolna Hills Region, Hungary, a total of 41 site plots were selected on agricultural land that had recently been used as grassland, meadow or vineyard. Aims of our study were (i) to test the taxonomic status of relic oak trees growing out of forested lands; (ii) to verify the origin of relic trees whether they regenerated by sprouts and suckers or by seeds in order to estimate their age and origin (nativeness); (iii) to test their microhabitats to see if forest-specific plant and fungal species were presented; (iv) and to test species to see if their presence linked to any forest vegetation in the past. Furthermore, the land-use type did not show a significant effect on the abundance of woody, dicot herbaceous, or monocot herbaceous plants recorded on sites based on maps from 1941 or earlier. The follow-up univariate ANOVA revealed a significant direct effect of recent land-use type (of 2022) on monocot herbaceous plants (F(3,33) = 5.21, p < 0.01). Additionally, a significant but weaker effect was observed on woody plants (F(3,33) = 3.22, p < 0.05). The overall past effect of land-use type showed a significantly high positive correlation between the abundance of woody plants and the number of times the maps showed forest or forest boundary land-use types (R = 0.46, p < 0.01). The plots have likely preserved and sustained the microhabitats of the native forest vegetation that was once distributed in the region. The site plots of relic oak trees, considered as flagstone habitats, create opportunities for gene flow, not only for the species with dispersal or discontinuous distribution, but also for the Vergilius oak populations. Therefore, relic trees and their microhabitats might have an important role in the mating system of various species and might also be valuable resources for genetic conservation programmes. The fiber-reinforced composite stringer is commonly used in large civil aircraft wing structures. Under compression loads, it exhibits complex failure modes, with matrix cracking being one of the most common. The quantitative analysis of matrix failure is important and difficult. To address this issue, a multiscale method combining the generalized method of cells (GMC) and macroscopic FEM models is employed to quantitatively predict matrix damage and failure. The extent of matrix damage in the composite structure is represented by the number of failed matrix subcells within the repeating unit cells. The 3D Tsai–Hill failure criterion is established for the matrix phase, and the maximum stress failure criterion is applied to the fiber subcell. Upon meeting the criterion, the stiffnesses of the failed subcells are immediately reduced to a nominal value. In the current study, the ultimate loads, failure modes and load–displacement curves of composite stringers subjected to compressive load are obtained by the experiment approach and the proposed multiscale model. The experimental and simulation results show good agreement, and the multiscale analysis method successfully predicts the extent of matrix damage in the composite stringer under compressive load. The number of failed matrix subcells quantitatively evaluates the damage extent within a 2 × 2 GMC model. The findings reveal that matrix subcell failures primarily occur in the 45° and −45° plies of the middle part of the stringer composite. Full article

Amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) is becoming an increasingly important technological material. Transport in this material is conceptualized as the heavy disorder of the material causing a conduction or mobility band-edge that randomly varies and undulates in space across the entire system. Thus, transport is envisioned as being dominated by percolation physics as carriers traverse this varying band-edge landscape of “hills” and “valleys”. It is then something of a missed opportunity to model such a system using only a compact approach—despite this being the primary focus of the existing literature—as such a system can easily be faithfully reproduced as a true microscopic TCAD model with a real physically varying potential. Thus, in this work, we develop such a “microscopic” TCAD model of a-IGZO and detail a number of key aspects of its implementation. We then demonstrate that it can accurately reproduce experimental results and consider the issue of the addition of non-conducting band-tail states in a numerically efficient manner. Finally, two short studies of 3D effects are undertaken to illustrate the utility of the model: specifically, the cases of variation effects as a function of device size and as a function of surface roughness scattering. The present research aimed to measure the degree of connectivity and create a map of the ecological connectivity that highlights the real or potential presence of green, ecological, or ecotourism circuits integrating the green infrastructure of San Juan de Lurigancho and the Mangomarca hills using graph theory applications implemented in the Graphab 2.8 software. Mangomarca and Huiracocha Park were selected for this study. In terms of the methodology, a simple approach based on landscape metrics, which are easy to interpret, was proposed to measure the connectivity of the mosaic of patches in the designated area. The IndiFrag software was used to obtain landscape metrics for the structural connectivity analysis. The Graphab software was employed for the functional connectivity analysis. Both tools proved effective in identifying vegetation gaps or the intensity of the greenery. Landsat 8 images from 8 July 2021 and 4 October 2021 were selected for this research due to the lower amount of cloud cover. Concerning the structural connectivity, the TMCl (patch size), NobCl (number of patches), and PerimCl (perimeter) metrics were effective in distinguishing the mosaic of urban landscape patches from the hill landscape. These indices confirm that the urban landscape patches have a higher number of fragments but are smaller in size compared to the hill landscape. Regarding the functional connectivity, it is evident that the patches are connected at lower-cost distances, averaging 7 cost units (210 m) during the wet season and 23 cost units (410 m) during the less humid season. However, these distances are too extensive and do not form ecological corridors. A survey of the population’s perception of the maximum separation distances between patches of vegetation cover that could still be considered a green corridor was included. The results indicate that a third of the sample (36%) prefer to walk down a hallway with a maximum separation distance of 10 m, while almost two-thirds (68%) would prefer a maximum separation distance of 50 m. Therefore, city planning should consider actions to reduce these distances and enable ecological connectivity in the area. It is recommended to continue researching the functional connectivity and determining the green corridors in the city to establish monitoring guidelines for the ecological connectivity of the city. Hill number per unit area and seedling number per hill are foundational agrotechnical factors shaping the growth and development of rice plants. This study aimed to determine the effects of decreasing the hill number per unit area combined with increasing the seedling number per hill on grain quality in hybrid rice. Field experiments were performed in Hengyang, Hunan Province, China, in 2022 and 2023 using the hybrid rice variety Huazheyou 261, as well as in Liuyang, Hunan Province, China, in 2023 using the hybrid rice varieties Yueyou 2646 and Zhenliangyouyuzhan. Treatments (combining hill number per unit area and seedling number per hill) encompassed a combination of 24 hills per m2 and one seedling per hill (H24S1) and a combination of 14 hills per m2 and three seedlings per hill (H14S3) in Hengyang, as well as a combination of 28 hills per m2 and two seedlings per hill (H28S2) and a combination of 14 hills per m2 and four seedlings per hill (H14S4) in Liuyang. There were no significant differences in the leaf area index at the heading stage, as well as no significant differences in canopy light transmittance during the grain-filling period between H24S1 and H14S3 in Hengyang, or between H28S2 and H14S4 in Liuyang. The differences in grain quality traits, including milling traits (brown, milled, and head rice rate), appearance traits (rice length, rice length-width ratio, chalky grain rate, and chalkiness degree), amylose and protein content, and pasting characteristics were also not significant between H24S1 and H14S3 in Hengyang, nor between H28S2 and H14S4 in Liuyang. This study indicates that the grain quality in hybrid rice is unaffected by decreasing the hill number per unit area integrated with increasing the seedling number per hill. Full article

The Elasmobranch Fossil Record of the Indo-Australian Archipelago since the Miocene: A Literature Review and New Discoveries from Northern Borneo

The Indo-Australian Archipelago (IAA) today exhibits the highest marine biodiversity, which has been evolving since the early Miocene. The existence of this high palaeobiodiversity is attested to by the presence of many fossil invertebrates; however, the region’s fossil fish record is sparse and understudied, which is also the case for cartilaginous fishes. Elasmobranch fossils are dominantly represented by shark and ray teeth in the geological record and can give a quick overview of the composition of the fauna. The first IAA elasmo fossils, shark teeth were described from Java (Indonesia) at the end of the 19th century, and until today, most of the publications are known from this island. In the early and middle of the 20th century, remarkable fossils were also reported from the islands of Madura (NE Java) and Sulawesi, some with detailed taxonomical descriptions. In addition, only sporadic reports on fossil occurrences exist elsewhere from the IAA, but these lack any detailed taxonomic accounts. In 2019 our research group reported a late Miocene elasmobranch fauna from Brunei (Borneo), which is now the most diverse known shallow water fossil assemblage from the entire IAA. This fauna was described from a single fossiliferous outcrop, called Ambug Hill. However, several new localities have been discovered and studied over the years, as a result the number of fossils increased, and their age range extended. Here we provide an overview of these new sites and their elasmobranch fossils, and describe remains from ten taxa among, of which eight are new to the IAA fossil record (Chiloscyllium sp., cf. Hemitriakis sp., Paragaleus sp., Carcharhinus borneensis, C. limbatus, Lamiopsis sp., Scoliodon sp., Rhinobatos sp.). The overall north Bornean elasmo assemblage is then compared with other IAA occurrences. An extended fauna list is given based on literature review and preliminary investigation of the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre collection in Leiden (The Netherlands) where most of the fossil fishes of the early explorations are stored. These assemblages are also briefly summarized, and attention is drawn to some of the unique and thus far unreported taxa (e.g., Dalatias licha). Full article

Children and youths diagnosed with FASD may experience a range of adverse health and social outcomes. This cross-sectional study investigated the characteristics and outcomes of children and youths diagnosed with FASD between 2015 and 2018 at the Sunny Hill Centre in British Columbia, Canada and examined the relationships between prenatal substance exposures, FASD diagnostic categories, and adverse health and social outcomes. Patient chart data were obtained for 1187 children and youths diagnosed with FASD and analyzed. The patients (mean age: 9.7 years; range: 2–19) had up to 6 physical and 11 mental health disorders. Prenatal exposure to other substances (in addition to alcohol) significantly increased the severity of FASD diagnosis (OR: 1.18): the odds of FASD with sentinel facial features (SFF) were 41% higher with prenatal cigarette/nicotine/tobacco exposure; 75% higher with exposure to cocaine/crack; and two times higher with exposure to opioids. Maternal mental health issues and poor nutrition also increase the severity of FASD diagnosis (60% and 6%, respectively). Prenatal exposure to other substances in addition to alcohol significantly predicts involvement in the child welfare system (OR: 1.52) and current substance use when adjusted for age (aOR: 1.51). Diagnosis of FASD with SFF is associated with an increased number of physical (R2 = 0.071, F (3,1183) = 30.51, p = 0.000) and mental health comorbidities (R2 = 0.023, F (3,1185) = 9.51, p = 0.000) as compared to FASD without SFF adjusted for age and the number of prenatal substances. Screening of pregnant women for alcohol and other substance use, mental health status, and nutrition is extremely important. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of inoculants of endophytic bacteria producing indoleacetic acid (IAA) on the physiological quality of seeds and the production of seedlings of Corymbia citriodora (Hook.) KD Hill & LAS Johnson. In the physiological quality test of the seeds, the treatments used were individual inoculation with Priestia megaterium, Exiguobacterium sibiricum, Pantoea vagans strain 45URP4-1, and Bacillus sp.; joint effect of the four strains (mix); inoculation only with the carrier (cassava starch and activated charcoal); carrier with 1.0 μg mL−1 of IAA; and non-inoculated control without IAA and without a carrier. In the production of seedlings in a greenhouse, the treatments were the same, except for the mix, which was replaced by P. vagans strain 7URP1-6 (Pvs7), as inoculation with the mix increased the number of abnormal seedlings. In the physiological quality test of seeds, seeds inoculated with the bacteria individually did not have the physiological quality impaired and the carrier created a microenvironment around the seeds, benefiting germination percentage, germination speed index, average germination time, and average germination speed. In the greenhouse, seedlings inoculated with Pvs7, P. megaterium and E. sibiricum were taller, with a larger stem diameter and dry mass of shoot, roots, and total. Seeds inoculated with E. sibiricum had higher averages for height, chlorophyll b content, and shoot and total dry mass, as well as a greater ability to colonize the rhizosphere and roots of C. citriodora, resulting in the production of higher-quality seedlings. Inoculation of seeds of C. citriodora with endophytic bacteria proved to be a promising alternative for plant development. Full article

Nitrogen (N) application rates and planting density are key factors affecting grain yield and quality. In this experiment, four varieties, Huijing 753 (HJ 753), Huijing 855 (HJ 855), Huijing 866 (HJ 866), and Dangjing 8 (DJ 8), were used to investigate their effects on the yield and quality of japonica rice in Anhui, which has a lower soil N supply capacity. The current study set four levels of N application N1, N2, N3, and N4 (120, 180, 240, and 300) kg ha−1 and three planting densities D1, D2, and D3 (high-density: 45 × 104; medium-density: 37.5 × 104; low-density: 32.2 × 104) hills ha−1 for a total of 12 treatments. The effects of N application and planting density on rice yield, composition, processing quality, appearance quality, and cooking quality were analyzed. The results showed that with the increase in N application rates and planting density, the effective panicle number per plant and grain number per panicle of each rice variety increased, while HJ 753, HJ 855, and HJ 866 reached the highest yield under the N3D1 treatment and then gradually declined, and DJ 8 had the highest yield in the N4D1 treatment. In addition, the processing quality of various varieties can be improved by increasing the N application rate and planting density, but the appearance quality will deteriorate, the amylose content will also decrease, and gel consistency will also be lower. Therefore, under medium-planting density conditions, N at a rate of 240 kg ha−1 was the best for HJ 753, HJ 855, and HJ 866, and using 300 kg ha−1 for DJ 8 resulted in high grain yields and superior rice grain quality. In the next step, physiological, biochemical, and genotypic analyses of these three japonica rice varieties were carried out to provide a scientific basis and technical support for accelerating the breeding of high-yield japonica rice varieties. Utilization of Rhodopseudomonas palustris in Crop Rotation Practice Boosts Rice Productivity and Soil Nutrient Dynamics

Using beneficial microorganisms, such as purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB), has shown enormous potential for improving plant growth and agricultural production. However, the full extent of their benefits and interactions with agricultural practices is yet to be fully understood. The present study aimed to investigate the use of PNSB in crop rotation practice, focusing on its impact on rice growth and yield. The experiment was conducted over two rice cropping seasons, with djulis grown between the rice as a rotation crop. The study shows that PNSB treatment increased the concentration of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) in plants, indicating enhanced photosynthesis. Moreover, when combined with crop rotation, PNSB remarkably improved soil fertility. These combined benefits resulted in substantial increases in tiller numbers (163%), leaf chlorophyll content (13%), and lodging resistance (66%), compared to the untreated plants. The combined treatment also resulted in higher productive tillers per hill (112%), average grain per hill (65%), and grain fertility (26%). This led to increased grain yield (65%), shoot dry weight (15%), and harvest index (37%). The findings clearly suggest that the incorporation of PNSB in crop rotation strategies can significantly augment the growth and yield of rice crops. These insights, pivotal for sustainable rice cultivation, hold the potential to simultaneously tackle the pressing issues of global food security and climate change. Full article

The efficiency of heuristic search algorithms is a critical factor in the realm of cryptographic primitive construction, particularly in the generation of highly nonlinear bijective permutations, known as substitution boxes (S-boxes). The vast search space of 256! (256 factorial) permutations for 8-bit sequences poses a significant challenge in isolating S-boxes with optimal nonlinearity, a crucial property for enhancing the resilience of symmetric ciphers against cryptanalytic attacks. Existing approaches to this problem suffer from high computational costs and limited success rates, necessitating the development of more efficient and effective methods. This study introduces a novel approach that addresses these limitations by dynamically adjusting the cost function parameters within the hill-climbing heuristic search algorithm. By incorporating principles from dynamic programming, our methodology leverages feedback from previous iterations to adaptively refine the search trajectory, leading to a significant reduction in the number of iterations required to converge on optimal solutions. Through extensive comparative analyses with state-of-the-art techniques, we demonstrate that our approach achieves a remarkable 100% success rate in locating 8-bit bijective S-boxes with maximal nonlinearity, while requiring only 50,000 iterations on average—a substantial improvement over existing methods. The proposed dynamic parameter adaptation mechanism not only enhances the computational efficiency of the search process, but also showcases the potential for interdisciplinary collaboration between the fields of heuristic optimization and cryptography. The practical implications of our findings are significant, as the ability to efficiently generate highly nonlinear S-boxes directly contributes to the development of more secure and robust symmetric encryption systems. Furthermore, the dynamic parameter adaptation concept introduced in this study opens up new avenues for future research in the broader context of heuristic optimization and its applications across various domains. A large number of research stations have been established to provide members of Antarctic expeditions with logistical support. A previous study confirmed that the wind and solar energy resources of the Chinese Zhongshan Station, a coastal station located in an area of Lassmann Hills in East Antarctica, are highly synergetic and complementary. Considering the demand for a renewable energy power supply in Zhongshan Station, this paper introduces a hybrid energy system with wind–solar–diesel–battery co-generation used as a power supply scheme. Based on the 2015 climate data for Zhongshan Station, the wind–solar resources, conventional energy system, and annual diesel consumption of the station area were analyzed. The annual electrical load demand of each building in the station area was quantitatively expounded. Compared with the original power supply system, and combined with the analysis results of the thermal load and electrical load demands of the station, an objective function based on the requirements of economy, reliability, and environmental protection was presented. According to the constraint conditions of the heat energy and electrical energy load balance in the station area, a multi-objective scheduling strategy for the system was designed. Finally, the effects of this scheduling strategy were analyzed under three different application scenarios. The results indicated that the annual load demand was significantly lower than before the scheduling, and that a 50% reduction in diesel consumption could be achieved, demonstrating that the multi-objective scheduling strategy proposed in this paper could achieve optimal energy scheduling and management of the renewable hybrid energy system.
