Smart buildings play a key role in the complex ecosystem of cities and are often subject to barriers that limit their development. Although identifying these barriers is fundamental to creating an enabling environment for this segment’s expansion, few works aim to identify these challenges. This work has two main objectives: (1) to research the main barriers limiting the development of new smart building projects and (2) to prioritize these barriers from the perspective of professionals with experience in the field. We adopted an exploratory approach common in research that focuses on identifying and prioritizing variables related to a phenomenon, which is based on two main actions: obtaining information through a careful literature review and consulting professionals who work in the concerned field. The results showed that professionals assessed the 23 barriers identified through bibliographic research as important, with the most important being related to lack of qualified professionals, shortage of government policies, higher initial and construction costs, macroeconomic barriers and access to financing, high cost of intelligent systems and technologies, regulatory barriers, lack of knowledge about the current and potential benefits of smart buildings, and more complex design and construction. Lipid disorders represent one of the most worrisome cardiovascular risk factors. The focus on the impact of lipids on cardiac and vascular health usually concerns low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, while the role of triglycerides (TGs) is given poor attention. The literature provides data on the impact of higher plasma concentrations in TGs on the cardiovascular system and, therefore, on the outcomes and comorbidities of patients. The risk for coronary heart diseases varies from 57 to 76% in patients with hypertriglyceridemia. Specifically, the higher the plasma concentrations in TGs, the higher the incidence and prevalence of death, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Nevertheless, the metabolism of TGs and the exact physiopathologic mechanisms which try to explain the relationship between TGs and cardiovascular outcomes are not completely understood. The aims of this narrative review were as follows: to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the metabolism of triglycerides and a possible suggestion for understanding the targets for counteracting hypertriglyceridemia; to describe the inner physiopathological background for the relationship between vascular and cardiac damages derived from higher plasma concentrations in TGs; and to outline the need for promoting further insights in therapies for reducing TGs plasma levels. The industrialization process has led to environmental deterioration, which has created challenges for sustainable development. However, there is an increasing inclination to purchase green furniture as a sustainable form of furniture. Hence, investigating the determinants of consumers’ intention to purchase green furniture is beneficial for promoting the adoption of sustainable furniture. Previous research has examined the functional aspects of purchasing behavior using the theory of planned behavior (TPB), while giving less consideration to affective elements. This study aimed to investigate the factors that influence the intention of future users to purchase green furniture, explicitly focusing on emotional perception. This study utilized the PAD three-dimensional emotion model. A novel conceptual model was developed, drawing upon the findings of the literature review. This study employed the questionnaire method to collect data, resulting in 412 valid samples. The collected data were then analyzed and processed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) in SmartPLS 3.0 software. Additionally, the mediating influence of the variables was examined using the bootstrap method. The results suggested that the perceived pleasure, arousal, and dominance all had a substantial influence on the beneficial effect of green furniture elements on purchase intention. Among these factors, pleasure (PP) had the strongest mediating effect on the relationship between green brand image (GBI) and purchase intention (PI). Arousal (PA) had the strongest mediating effect on the relationship between eco-innovation (EI) and purchase intention (PI). Dominance (PD) had the strongest mediating effect on the relationship between purchase customization (PC) and purchase intention (PI). Furthermore, this paper examined the disparities between the characteristics of green furniture and conventional furniture in terms of their ability to stimulate emotional responses and influence consumers’ intention to purchase. This study revealed that green features (GF) have a greater capacity to evoke emotional responses in consumers, consequently impacting their intention to purchase green furniture. The study’s findings have both theoretical implications and practical relevance. In theory, these findings enhance the theoretical framework of purchase intention for green furniture. In practice, they provide specific ideas and recommendations for green furniture companies to develop emotional marketing strategies. Full article

The goal of this review is to present a wide range of hybrid formulations and composites containing calcium orthophosphates (abbreviated as CaPO4) that are suitable for use in biomedical applications and currently on the market. The bioactive, biocompatible, and osteoconductive properties of various CaPO4-based formulations make them valuable in the rapidly developing field of biomedical research, both in vitro and in vivo. Due to the brittleness of CaPO4, it is essential to combine the desired osteologic properties of ceramic CaPO4 with those of other compounds to create novel, multifunctional bone graft biomaterials. Consequently, this analysis offers a thorough overview of the hybrid formulations and CaPO4-based composites that are currently known. To do this, a comprehensive search of the literature on the subject was carried out in all significant databases to extract pertinent papers. There have been many formulations found with different material compositions, production methods, structural and bioactive features, and in vitro and in vivo properties. When these formulations contain additional biofunctional ingredients, such as drugs, proteins, enzymes, or antibacterial agents, they offer improved biomedical applications. Moreover, a lot of these formulations allow cell loading and promote the development of smart formulations based on CaPO4. This evaluation also discusses basic problems and scientific difficulties that call for more investigation and advancements. It also indicates perspectives for the future. Full article

Due to the unpredictable nature of the wind, uncertainty in the characteristics of wind electrical conversion systems (WECSs), and inefficient management tactics, wind turbines have historically had operational inefficiencies. In order to overcome these drawbacks, the hybrid excitation synchronous generator (HESG), an alternative to traditional generators, is presented in this study along with the suggestion to use robust regulators to regulate HESGs. This research begins with a thorough review of the literature on generators often seen in modern wind systems. Next, a simulation platform that merges a WECS with a HESG tied to an isolated load is built using the MATLAB Simulink environment. Pitch angle control investigation shows a new experimental approach to determine the link between turbine output and the reference pitch angle. Furthermore, an evaluation of the mechanical stability of the WECS is conducted by a comparison of the performance of a H∞ controller and a CRONE controller. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the CRONE controller in reducing mechanical vibrations in the WECS. By reducing vibrations, the proposed control technique enhances the overall performance and efficiency of the wind turbine system. The field is extended by the demonstration of how HESGs and reliable control systems can enhance wind turbine performance while eliminating inherent limitations. Full article

Nordic Walking as a Non-Pharmacological Intervention for Chronic Pain and Fatigue: Systematic Review

Objective: We aimed to analyze and summarize the available scientific evidence on the benefits of Nordic walking for people with chronic pain and fatigue. Literature Survey: This systematic review adhered to PRISMA guidelines and conducted a comprehensive search across five databases using the PICO strategy. Methodology: Inclusion criteria encompassed randomized trials evaluating Nordic walking for pain and fatigue. Two authors independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed methodological quality using the PEDro scale. Synthesis: A total of 14 studies were included, with sample sizes ranging from 20 to 136 participants. The methodological quality of the included studies varied from fair (five studies) to good (nine studies). The interventions consisted of supervised Nordic walking sessions lasting 6 to 24 weeks, with a frequency of 2 to 4 days per week and duration of 25 to 75 min. The results of this review suggest that Nordic walking had beneficial effects in six of the eight studies that analyzed participant fatigue. However, Nordic walking did not show greater beneficial effects on fatigue than walking (two studies) or than not performing physical activity (one study). Additionally, six of the nine studies that examined the effects of Nordic walking on participants’ perceptions of pain showed beneficial results. However, five studies that compared Nordic walking with control groups did not find any significant inter-group differences on pain. Conclusions: Based on our findings, Nordic walking exercise programs provide a potentially efficient method for alleviating pain and fatigue in people with chronic conditions. Its straightforwardness and ease of learning make it accessible to a broad spectrum of participants, which can result in higher adherence rates and lasting positive effects. Full article

This literature review analyzes the historical development of polo, its organizational structure, the course of the game, as well as the breeding, rearing, and training practices of polo horses. Frequently occurring ailments, such as musculoskeletal injuries, respiratory diseases, and internal illnesses, are highlighted. Lameness is a major problem, with injuries to the superficial digital flexor tendon being the most common cause. Other notable diseases include exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), myositis, rhabdomyolysis, and equine infectious anemia (EIA). To ensure the welfare of polo horses, effective prevention and management strategies are crucial. These include proper training, the adaptation of the ground surface, appropriate shoeing, and compliance with animal welfare guidelines and association rules. Collaboration between associations, players, organizers, and veterinarians is crucial. Promoting responsible management practices and raising awareness among stakeholders can help ensure that polo continues to thrive while maintaining high animal welfare standards. Full article

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has emerged as a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, which has motivated the implementation of public policies to promote their use in several countries. However, the high adoption of EVs poses challenges for the electricity sector, as it would imply an increase in energy demand and possible impacts on the power quality (PQ) of the power grid. Therefore, it is important to conduct EV integration studies in the power grid to determine the amount that can be incorporated without causing problems and identify the areas of the power sector that will require reinforcements. Accurate EV load patterns are required for this type of study that, through mathematical modeling, reflect both the dynamic behavior and the factors that influence the decision to recharge EVs. This article aims to present an overview of EVs, examine the different factors considered in the literature for modeling EV load patterns, and review modeling methods. EV load modeling methods are classified into deterministic, statistical, and machine learning. The article shows that each modeling method has its advantages, disadvantages, and data requirements, ranging from simple load modeling to more accurate models requiring large datasets. Full article

Background and Objectives: Two of the most exciting new technologies are biotechnology and nanotechnology. The science of nanostructures, or nanotechnology, is concerned with the development, testing, and use of structures and molecules with nanoscale dimensions ranging from 1 to 100 nm. The development of materials and tools with high specificity that interact directly at the subcellular level is what makes nanotechnology valuable in the medical sciences. At the cellular or tissue level, this might be converted into focused clinical applications with the greatest possible therapeutic benefits and the fewest possible side effects. The purpose of the present study was to review the literature and explore the applicability of the nanostructured materials in the process of the regeneration of the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Materials and Methods: An electronic search of articles was conducted in several databases, such as PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science, to conduct this study, and the 183 articles that were discovered were chosen and examined, and only 22 articles met the inclusion criteria in this review. Results: The findings of this study demonstrate that using nanoparticles can improve the mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and osteoinductivity of biomaterials. Conclusions: Most recently, breakthroughs in tissue engineering and nanotechnology have led to significant advancements in the design and production of bone graft substitutes and hold tremendous promise for the treatment of bone abnormalities. The creation of intelligent nanostructured materials is essential for various applications and therapies, as it allows for the precise and long-term delivery of medication, which yields better results. As a result of globalization and other factors, periodic shocks to economic activity have become more frequent in recent years. How these periods of economic uncertainty affect different business sectors and industries has become an important emerging area of research activity. Sensory experiences are increasingly recognized as an important aspect of the customer experience. Likewise, online reviews and the usefulness rating given by review consumers are important factors in the consumers’ purchasing decision-making process. How these factors are affected by periods of crisis is an underexplored area of research that this study addresses through the exploration and comparison of the perceived helpfulness of sensory experience online reviews, specifically in the hotel industry, before and since the COVID-19 pandemic. Primary data were harvested from the Booking.com website before and during the pandemic; 143,739 online reviews were analyzed using a keyword search based on six dimensions of hotel services to identify those reviews with sensory experience content. The analysis applied Herzberg’s two-factor theory, where each service attribute was examined as both positive (satisfier) and negative (dissatisfier). Empirical analytical methods were applied to produce compelling findings. The findings indicate that the reviews of multisensory experiences affect the perceived value of a post both negatively and positively, respectively, and that the pandemic did not affect the relationship between reviews and the perceived helpfulness of the reviews. This study has both theoretical and practical implications for researchers and practitioners by applying and building on Herzberg’s two-factor theory of online reviews in the hospitality sector during a period of crisis, as well as addressing a gap in the existing literature on how the pandemic affected the relationships between the online reviews of sensory experiences and their perceived usefulness. Practitioners may find the results useful in how they allocate their resources and focus during such periods to optimize their competitiveness. Full article

Given the growing global threat and rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), addressing this metabolic disease is imperative. T2DM is preceded by prediabetes (PD), an intermediate hyperglycaemia that goes unnoticed for years in patients. Several studies have shown that gut microbial diversity and glucose homeostasis in PD or T2DM patients are affected. Therefore, this review aims to synthesize the existing literature to elucidate the association between high-calorie diets, intestinal permeability and their correlation with PD or T2DM. Moreover, it discusses the beneficial effects of different dietary interventions on improving gut health and glucose metabolism. The primary factor contributing to complications seen in PD or T2DM patients is the chronic consumption of high-calorie diets, which alters the gut microbial composition and increases the translocation of toxic substances from the intestinal lumen into the bloodstream. This causes an increase in inflammatory response that further impairs glucose regulation. Several dietary approaches or interventions have been implemented. However, only a few are currently in use and have shown promising results in improving beneficial microbiomes and glucose metabolism. Therefore, additional well-designed studies are still necessary to thoroughly investigate whether improving gut health using other types of dietary interventions can potentially manage or reverse PD, thereby preventing the onset of T2DM. Following up on the first PBPK model for an oral vaccine built for alpha-tocopherol, three peptides are explored in this article to verify if they could support an oral vaccine formulation as adjuvants using the same PBPK modeling approach. A literature review was conducted to verify what peptides have been used as adjuvants in the last decades, and it was noticed that MDP derivatives have been used, with one of them even being commercially approved and used as an adjuvant when administered intravenously in oncology. The aim of this study was to build optimized models for three MDP peptides (MDP itself, MTP-PE, and murabutide) and to verify if they could act as adjuvants for an oral vaccine. Challenges faced by peptides in an oral delivery system are taken into consideration, and improvements to the formulations to achieve better results are described in a step-wise approach to reach the most-optimized model. Once simulations are performed, results are compared to determine what would be the best peptide to support as an oral adjuvant. According to our results, MTP-PE, the currently approved and commercialized peptide, could have potential to be incorporated into an oral formulation. It would be interesting to proceed with further in vivo experiments to determine the behavior of this peptide when administered orally with a proper formulation to overcome the challenges of oral delivery systems. Towards the Improvement of Patient Experience Evaluation Items for Patient-Centered Care in Head and Neck Cancer: A Qualitative Comparative Study

Owing to long-term treatment, frequent consultations, and complications, the evaluation of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) must be improved. This study explored an opportunity for improving patient experience (PE) evaluation of patients with HNC to achieve a patient-centered, integrative evaluation model based on patient needs. The study comprised four phases: (1) a systematic literature review of PE factors for patient quality of life (QoL) and establishment of PE factor categories as a framework, (2) a review of current cancer or HNC PE evaluation tools, (3) identification of potential PE evaluation items based on patient needs by conducting user research, and (4) suggestion of integrative HNC PE evaluation items through expert validation. As a result, the 39 potential items were initially identified from the literature review and user research. After conducting two survey rounds with experts, 25 items were suggested as HNC PE evaluation items. These underscore the importance of highlighting the patient’s participation, the medical staff’s comprehensive information delivery, empathy, and collaborative communication, the hospital’s support of communication channels, the medical environment for patient emotional support, the education program, and systematic patient satisfaction data management. PE evaluation items that consider the diverse perspectives of stakeholders involved in HNC treatment and factors of comprehensive PE will contribute to improving HNC patient-centered care (PCC). An epilepsy diagnosis reduces a patient’s quality of life tremendously, and it is a fate shared by over 50 million people worldwide. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is largely considered a nongenetic or acquired form of epilepsy that develops in consequence of neuronal trauma by injury, malformations, inflammation, or a prolonged (febrile) seizure. Although extensive research has been conducted to understand the process of epileptogenesis, a therapeutic approach to stop its manifestation or to reliably cure the disease has yet to be developed. In this review, we briefly summarize the current literature predominately based on data from excitotoxic rodent models on the cellular events proposed to drive epileptogenesis and thoroughly discuss the major molecular pathways involved, with a focus on neurogenesis-related processes and transcription factors. Furthermore, recent investigations emphasized the role of the genetic background for the acquisition of epilepsy, including variants of neurodevelopmental genes. Mutations in associated transcription factors may have the potential to innately increase the vulnerability of the hippocampus to develop epilepsy following an injury—an emerging perspective on the epileptogenic process in acquired forms of epilepsy. Lethal Complications and Complex Genotypes in Shwachman Diamond Syndrome: Report of a Family with Recurrent Neonatal Deaths and a Case-Based Brief Review of the Literature

Shwachman Diamond Syndrome (SDS) is a multi-system disease characterized by exocrine pancreatic insufficiency with malabsorption, infantile neutropenia and aplastic anemia. Life-threatening complications include progression to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), critical deep-tissue infections and asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy. In most patients, SDS results from biallelic pathogenic variants in the SBDS gene, different combinations of which contribute to heterogenous clinical presentations. Null variants are not well tolerated, supporting the theory that the loss of SBDS expression is likely lethal in both mice and humans. A novel complex genotype (SBDS:c.[242C>G;258+2T>C];[460-1G>A]/WFS1:c.[2327A>T];[1371G>T]) was detected in a family with recurrent neonatal deaths. A female neonate died three hours after birth with hemolytic anemia, and a male neonate with severe anemia, thrombocytopenia and neutropenia succumbed on day 40 after Staphylococcus epidermidis infection. A subsequent review of the literature focused on fatal complications, complex SBDS genotypes and/or unusual clinical presentations and disclosed rare cases, of which some had unexpected combinations of genetic and clinical findings. The impact of pathogenic variants and associated phenotypes is discussed in the context of data sharing towards expanding scientific expert networks, consolidating knowledge and advancing an understanding of novel underlying genotypes and complex phenotypes, facilitating informed clinical decisions and disease management.
