This paper presents the initial steps taken in analysing the benefits of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), especially Modular Autonomous Vehicles (MAVs), in search of sustainable solutions for reducing energy consumption per passenger in air transport. For this particular case, a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) solution is proposed, correlating airside transport with landside transport, as an urban mobility alternative. To better understand the benefits of the proposal, this paper studies the impact on energy consumption conceptual differences between a conventional public transport fleet using Battery Electric Buses (BEBs) and an MAV fleet. Simulations for simple public transport tasks are performed to highlight the advantages of the modular vehicle concept, in which routes are assigned dynamically based on the requested passenger carrying capacity and travel distance, aiming to optimize the efficiency of the entire system. With a proven reduction in energy consumption due to better use of available passenger capacity and reduced travel times in which the vehicle is driving with a number of passengers less than half of its capacity, the concept can be addressed further in developing a predictive system that processes public transport data and delivers an optimized schedule for the entire fleet. The main goal being to improve overall operational efficiency and total cost of ownership, the second part of the paper studies the impact of weight distribution on efficiency parameters such as energy consumption, range, and overall performance of an electric bus. The impact on dynamic elements such as acceleration, braking, and cornering performance is analyzed, to assess the viability and safety of all types of electric bus operations. Full article

In order to reduce the environmental impacts caused by the transport sector, autonomous and electrified on-the-road modular vehicles (otrm) could be a solution. By separating the drive unit from the transport unit, they enable use cases for various transport tasks and reduce individual and motorized transport and its generated emissions. Therefore, the goal of this study is to assess the environmental impacts from cradle to grave by applying the LCA methodology for a defined otrm—the U-Shift—vehicle fleet considering a specific use case relative to a reference vehicle fleet. The results indicate that the U-Shift fleet reduces the life cycle environmental impacts in a range of 3–28% for all of the seven impact categories, which are analyzed in detail. While emissions from the use phase are similar, U-Shift has an environmental benefit in the production phase due to a low amount of resource-intensive driveboards. Considering the early development stage of U-Shift, several measures are discussed, addressing the material and configuration aspects of the vehicles as well as optimized use case applications, which promise further impact-reduction potential. Land efficient last mile delivery concepts are key to reducing the traffic in cities and to minimising its environmental impact. This paper proposes a decision support method that evaluates the autonomous delivery concept and applies it to one year’s worth of real parcel delivery data in London. Deliveries to modular and fixed lockers with autonomous delivery vans and road-based autonomous lockers (RAL) and sidewalk autonomous delivery robots (SADRs) have been simulated. Various types of autonomous delivery van fleets, depot locations, customer modes of transport, parcel demand levels, parcel locker network densities and adjustment frequencies of modular lockers are considered. A routing and scheduling algorithm is used to optimise delivery tours and vehicle choice. The optimisation algorithm finds both the optimal number of collection and delivery points (CDPs) and the delivery concept (e.g., modular lockers, sidewalk autonomous delivery robot) depending on the customer mode chosen. The results show that modular lockers which are adjusted weekly are the best option for the current or higher parcel demand levels and road-autonomous parcel lockers (RAL-R) are the best option at the lowest parcel demand level. This article presents a remote management architecture of an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) fleet to aid in the management of solar power plants and object tracking. The proposed system is a competitive advantage for sola r energy production plants, due to the reduction in costs for maintenance, surveillance, and security tasks, especially in large solar farms. This new approach consists of creating a hardware and software architecture that allows for performing different tasks automatically, as well as remotely using fleets of UAVs. The entire system, composed of the aircraft, the servers, communication networks, and the processing center, as well as the interfaces for accessing the services via the web, has been designed for this specific purpose. Image processing and automated remote control of the UAV allow generating autonomous missions for the inspection of defects in solar panels, saving costs compared to traditional manual inspection. Another application of this architecture related to security is the detection and tracking of pedestrians and vehicles, both for road safety and for surveillance and security issues of solar plants. The novelty of this system with respect to current systems is summarized in that all the software and hardware elements that allow the inspection of solar panels, surveillance, and people counting, as well as traffic management tasks, have been defined and detailed. The modular system presented allows the exchange of different specific vision modules for each task to be carried out. Finally, unlike other systems, calibrated fixed cameras are used in addition to the cameras embedded in the drones of the fleet, which complement the system with vision algorithms based on deep learning for identification, surveillance, and inspection.
