Recently, legislative acts on the protection of the green belt have been increasingly adopted in various states. Using the legislation examples of the United Kingdom, the Canadian province of Ontario, and Russia, we have identified public relations that can be the subject of regulation of such legislation. Based on the analysis of typical legal conflicts, the problem areas which need the most attention of the legislator have been identified. The methods of differentiation of the legal regime for various areas within the green belt are investigated, taking into account their geographical features and specific management goals. The most promising areas for legal regulation that require the increased attention of legislators speak to the establishment of the procedures and criteria for excluding land plots from the green belt, the regulation of village development processes within the green belt, the establishment of a comprehensive list of agricultural types of permitted use, and the establishment of the procedure for the development of specialized plans or strategies for the use and protection of the green belt. The article offers solutions to these issues. The methodology of comparative law, including the functional method, was used in the study. Full article

[18F]FDG PET/CT Imaging Is Associated with Lower In-Hospital Mortality in Patients with Pyogenic Spondylodiscitis—A Registry-Based Analysis of 29,362 Cases

Background: While MRI is the primary diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of spondylodiscitis, the role of [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) PET/CT is gaining prominence. This study aimed to determine the frequency of [18F]FDG PET/CT usage and its impact on the in-hospital mortality rate in patients with spondylodiscitis, particularly in the geriatric population. Methods: We conducted a Germany-wide cross-sectional study from 2019 to 2021 using an open-access, Germany-wide database, analyzing cases with ICD-10 codes M46.2-, M46.3-, and M46.4- (‘Osteomyelitis of vertebrae’, ‘Infection of intervertebral disc (pyogenic)’, and ‘Discitis unspecified’). Diagnostic modalities were compared for their association with in-hospital mortality, with a focus on [18F]FDG PET/CT. Results: In total, 29,362 hospital admissions from 2019 to 2021 were analyzed. Of these, 60.1% were male and 39.9% were female, and 71.8% of the patients were aged 65 years and above. The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 6.5% for the entire cohort and 8.2% for the geriatric subgroup (p < 0.001). Contrast-enhanced (ce) MRI (48.1%) and native CT (39.4%) of the spine were the most frequently conducted diagnostic modalities. [18F]FDG PET/CT was performed in 2.7% of cases. CeCT was associated with increased in-hospital mortality (OR = 2.03, 95% CI: 1.90–2.17, p < 0.001). Cases with documented [18F]FDG PET/CT showed a lower frequency of in-hospital deaths (OR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.18–0.50; p = 0.002). This finding was more pronounced in patients aged 65 and above (OR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.27–0.65, p = 0.001). Conclusions: Despite its infrequent use, [18F]FDG PET/CT was associated with a lower in-hospital mortality rate in patients with spondylodiscitis, particularly in the geriatric cohort. This study is limited by only considering data on hospitalized patients and relying on the assumption of error-free coding. Further research is needed to optimize diagnostic approaches for spondylodiscitis. Full article

The forecasting of charging demand for electric vehicles (EVs) plays a vital role in maintaining grid stability and optimizing energy distribution. Therefore, an innovative method for the prediction of EV charging load demand is proposed in this study to address the downside of the existing techniques in capturing the spatial–temporal heterogeneity of electric vehicle (EV) charging loads and predicting the charging demand of electric vehicles. Additionally, an innovative method of electric vehicle charging load demand forecasting is proposed, which is based on the weighted measurement fusion unscented Kalman filter (UKF) algorithm, to improve the accuracy and efficiency of forecasting. First, the data collected from OpenStreetMap and Amap are used to analyze the distribution of urban point-of-interest (POI), to accurately classify the functional areas of the city, and to determine the distribution of the urban road network, laying a foundation for modeling. Second, the travel chain theory was applied to thoroughly analyze the travel characteristics of EV users. The Improved Floyd (IFloyd) algorithm is used to determine the optimal route. Also, a Monte Carlo simulation is performed to estimate the charging load for electric vehicle users in a specific region. Then, a weighted measurement fusion UKF (WMF–UKF) state estimator is introduced to enhance the accuracy of prediction, which effectively integrates multi-source data and enables a more detailed prediction of the spatial–temporal distribution of load demand. Finally, the proposed method is validated comparatively against traffic survey data and the existing methods by conducting a simulation experiment in an urban area. The results show that the method proposed in this paper is applicable to predict the peak hours more accurately compared to the reference method, with the accuracy of first peak prediction improved by 53.53% and that of second peak prediction improved by 23.23%. The results not only demonstrate the high performance of the WMF–UKF prediction model in forecasting peak periods but also underscore its potential in supporting grid operations and management, which provides a new solution to improving the accuracy of EV load demand forecasting. Blockchain technology has gained significant attention in recent years for its potential to revolutionize various sectors, including finance, supply chain management, and digital forensics. While blockchain’s decentralization enhances security, it complicates the identification and tracking of illegal activities, making it challenging to link blockchain addresses to real-world identities. Also, although immutability protects against tampering, it introduces challenges for forensic investigations as it prevents the modification or deletion of evidence, even if it is fraudulent. Hence, this paper provides a systematic literature review and examination of state-of-the-art studies in blockchain forensics to offer a comprehensive understanding of the topic. This paper provides a comprehensive investigation of the fundamental principles of blockchain forensics, exploring various techniques and applications for conducting digital forensic investigations in blockchain. Based on the selected search strategy, 46 articles (out of 672) were chosen for closer examination. The contributions of these articles were discussed and summarized, highlighting their strengths and limitations. This paper examines the selected papers to identify diverse digital forensic frameworks and methodologies used in blockchain forensics, as well as how blockchain-based forensic solutions have enhanced forensic investigations. In addition, this paper discusses the common applications of blockchain-based forensic frameworks and examines the associated legal and regulatory challenges encountered in conducting a forensic investigation within blockchain systems. Open issues and future research directions of blockchain forensics were also discussed. This paper provides significant value for researchers, digital forensic practitioners, and investigators by providing a comprehensive and up-to-date review of existing research and identifying key challenges and opportunities related to blockchain forensics. Steel columns, which are widely used in building frameworks and spatial structures, are susceptible to capacity degradation during fires, potentially leading to the overall collapse of buildings. Existing research on the fire resistance of steel columns assumes that the temperature loads encountered by steel columns are evenly distributed vertically. However, real-world fire scenarios often feature significant vertical temperature differences. Therefore, this study comprehensively investigated these variations to derive a temperature curve that accurately represents real fire conditions. Subsequently, the fire resistance limits of steel columns were studied using this temperature curve, leading to a revised calculation formula for the critical fire resistance temperatures of steel columns. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) Nonuniform longitudinal temperature distributions are influenced by parameters such as the fire source distance, the heights of ventilation openings, and the distance between a vent and the temperature measurement point. Among them, the fire source distance has the greatest impact, with the maximum longitudinal temperature difference reaching over 500 °C. (2) Variations in the load ratio and longitudinal temperature differences alter the failure positions of steel columns, reducing their critical temperatures by up to 200 °C. (3) The revised critical fire resistance temperature formula is more accurate and safer compared with that outlined in the “Technical Code for Fire Protection of Steel Structures” (GB51249-2017). These findings offer valuable insights for the fire designs of steel columns. Full article

Polyols such as 1,5-pentadiol, 1,6-hexanediol, and 1,2,6-hexanetriol are crucial chemicals, traditionally derived from non-renewable fossil sources. In the pursuit of sustainable development, exploring renewable and environmentally benign routes for their production becomes imperative. Furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural are C5 and C6 biomass-derived platform molecules, which have potential in the synthesis of various polyols through hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions. Currently, there is an extensive body of literature exploring the transformation of biomass-derived furan compounds. However, a comprehensive review of the transformation of furan compounds to polyols is lacking. We summarized the literature from recent years about the ring-opening reaction involved in converting furan compounds to polyols. This article reviews the research progress on the transformation of furfural, furfuryl alcohol, and 2-methylfuran to 1,2-pentadiol, 1,4-pentadiol, 1,5-pentadiol, and 1,2,5-pentanetriol, as well as the transformation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 1,2-hexanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, and 1,2,6-hexanetriol. The effects of the supported Pd, Pt, Ru, Ni, Cu, Co, and bimetallic catalysts are discussed through examining the synergistic effects of the catalysts and the effects of metal sites, acidic/basic sites, hydrogen spillover, etc. Reaction parameters like temperature, hydrogen pressure, and solvent are considered. The ring opening catalytic reaction of furan rings is summarized, and the catalytic mechanisms of single-metal and bimetallic catalysts and their catalytic processes and reaction conditions are discussed and summarized. It is believed that this review will act as a key reference and inspiration for researchers in this field. Full article

Enhancing Surface Water Monitoring through Multi-Satellite Data-Fusion of Landsat-8/9, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-1 SAR

Long revisit intervals and cloud susceptibility have restricted the applicability of earth observation satellites in surface water studies. Integrating multiple satellites offers potential for more frequent observations, yet combining different satellite sources, particularly optical and SAR satellites, presents complexities. This research explores the data-fusion potential and limitations of Landsat-8/9 Operational Land Imager (OLI), Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI), and Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture (SAR) satellites to enhance surface water monitoring. By focusing on segmented surface water images, we demonstrate that combining optical and SAR data is generally effective and straightforward using a simple statistical thresholding algorithm. Kappa coefficients(κ) ranging from 0.80 to 0.95 indicate very strong harmony for integration across reservoirs, lakes, and river environments. In vegetative environments, integration with S1SAR shows weak harmony, with κ values ranging from 0.27 to 0.45, indicating the need for further studies. Global revisit interval maps reveal significant improvement in median revisit intervals from 15.87 to 22.81 days using L8/9 alone, to 4.51 to 7.77 days after incorporating S2, and further to 3.48 to 4.62 days after adding S1SAR. Even during wet season months, multi-satellite fusion maintained the median revisit intervals to less than a week. Maximizing all available open-source earth observation satellites is integral for advancing studies requiring more frequent surface water observations, such as flood, inundation, and hydrological modeling. In the context of 5G networks, this paper investigates microstrip array antennas and mobile terminal MIMO array antennas. It introduces two innovative designs and, based on these, develops and fabricates a mobile terminal antenna. The first of these designs, a 4 × 4 microstrip array antenna operating in the LTE band 42 (3.4–3.6 GHz), is researched and fabricated and an innovative approach, combining embedded and coaxial feeding methods, is proposed and employed. Measurement results indicate a bandwidth of 373 MHz (3.321–3.694 GHz), achieving a relative bandwidth of 10.7%. The antenna exhibits a high gain of 12.7 dBi, with an undistorted radiation pattern, demonstrating excellent directional characteristics. The second of these designs, a “loop-slot” MIMO antenna designed for 5G mobile devices with metal frames, is investigated. By opening slots in the metal frame and integrating them into the antenna’s feeding structure, the decoupling principle is analyzed from the perspective of characteristic mode theory. This design shares resonant modes between the loop and slot antennas, allowing for the overlapping placement of the two antenna units. Experimental results confirm an isolation level exceeding 21 dB, with significantly reduced dimensions. Finally, an eight-unit MIMO antenna is designed and fabricated for 5G mobile devices with metal frames. Continuous optimization of the “loop-slot” module layout and unit spacing leads to a compact and miniaturized antenna structure. Measurement results show an isolation level exceeding 17 dB, radiation efficiency ranging from 65.8% to 73.7%, and an envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) below 0.03. Finally, an analysis of specific absorption rate (SAR) demonstrates excellent MIMO performance in terms of human body radiation exposure. Full article

The fast prediction of the extent and impact of accidental air pollution releases is important to enable a quick and informed response, especially in cities. Despite this importance, only a small number of case studies are available studying the dispersion of air pollutants from fires in a short distance (O(1 km)) in urban areas. While monitoring pollution levels in Southampton, UK, using low-cost sensors, a fire broke out from an outbuilding containing roughly 3000 reels of highly flammable cine nitrate film and movie equipment, which resulted in high values of PM2.5 being measured by the sensors approximately 1500 m downstream of the fire site. This provided a unique opportunity to evaluate urban air pollution dispersion models using observed data for PM2.5 and the meteorological conditions. Two numerical approaches were used to simulate the plume from the transient fire: a high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics model with large-eddy simulation (LES) embedded in the open-source package OpenFOAM, and a lower-fidelity Gaussian plume model implemented in a commercial software package: the Atmospheric Dispersion Modeling System (ADMS). Both numerical models were able to quantitatively reproduce consistent spatial and temporal profiles of the PM2.5 concentration at approximately 1500 m downstream of the fire site. Considering the unavoidable large uncertainties, a comparison between the sensor measurements and the numerical predictions was carried out, leading to an approximate estimation of the emission rate, temperature, and the start and duration of the fire. The estimation of the fire start time was consistent with the local authority report. The LES data showed that the fire lasted for at least 80 min at an emission rate of 50 g/s of PM2.5. The emission was significantly greater than a ‘normal’ house fire reported in the literature, suggesting the crucial importance of the emission estimation and monitoring of PM2.5 concentration in such incidents. Finally, we discuss the advantages and limitations of the two numerical approaches, aiming to suggest the selection of fast-response numerical models at various compromised levels of accuracy, efficiency and cost. Surgical gesture recognition is an important research direction in the field of computer-assisted intervention. Currently, research on surgical gesture recognition primarily focuses on robotic surgery, with a lack of studies in traditional surgery, particularly open surgery. Therefore, this study established a dataset simulating open surgery for research on surgical gesture recognition in the field of open surgery. With the assistance of professional surgeons, we defined a vocabulary of 10 surgical gestures based on suturing tasks in open procedures. In addition, this paper proposes a surgical gesture recognition method that integrates the R3D network with a multi-head attention mechanism (R3D-MHA). This method uses the R3D network to extract spatiotemporal features and combines it with the multi-head attention mechanism for relational learning of these features. The effectiveness of the R3D-MHA method in the field of open surgery gesture recognition was validated through two experiments: offline recognition and online recognition. The accuracy at the gesture instance level for offline recognition was 92.3%, and the frame accuracy for online recognition was 73.4%. Finally, its performance was further validated on the publicly available JIGSAWS dataset. Compared to other online recognition methods, the accuracy improved without using additional data. This work lays the foundation for research on surgical gesture recognition in open surgery and has significant applications in process monitoring, surgeon skill assessment and educational training for open surgeries. This study investigates the impact of elevated temperatures on arthropod communities in intensively managed pastures on the volcanic island of Terceira, Azores (Portugal), using a functional trait approach. Open Top Chambers (OTCs) were employed to simulate increased temperatures, and the functional traits of ground dwelling arthropods were analyzed along a small elevation gradient (180–400 m) during winter and summer. Key findings include lower abundances of herbivores, coprophagous organisms, detritivores, and fungivores at high elevations in summer, with predators showing a peak at middle elevations. Larger-bodied arthropods were more prevalent at higher elevations during winter, while beetles exhibited distinct ecological traits, with larger species peaking at middle elevations. The OTCs significantly affected the arthropod communities, increasing the abundance of herbivores, predators, coprophagous organisms, and fungivores during winter by alleviating environmental stressors. Notably, iridescent beetles decreased with elevation and were more common inside OTCs at lower elevations, suggesting a thermoregulatory advantage. The study underscores the importance of considering functional traits in assessing the impacts of climate change on arthropod communities and highlights the complex, species-specific nature of their responses to environmental changes. Recent advancements in aesthetic medicine offer innovative cosmetic solutions to enhance patient skin quality and appearance. Advanced treatment options enable practitioners to effectively address skin aging signs, pigmentation imbalance, and loss of elasticity in ambulatory and home-based care regimens. Exosomes (nanoscale cell-derived vesicles) transport a variety of biomolecules and are pivotal in physiological intercellular communication. Importantly, exosomes have recently emerged as key endogenous players in tissular regeneration. More broadly (from an active ingredient purity standpoint), exosomes, stem cell secretomes, and cell culture-conditioned media have been clinically proven to exert multifaceted beneficial topical effects (anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-aging, skin rejuvenation). Therefore, human, animal, and plant-derived exosomes or other refined sub-cellular biological fractions are gaining substantial interest within the aesthetic and cosmetic industries. Notably, such approaches are thought to be among the most promising novel contenders for advanced, biologically inspired skin prejuvenation and rejuvenation care. The present narrative review summarizes the latest clinically oriented research on exosomes and cell culture-conditioned media, highlighting their mechanisms of action in various topical applications. Furthermore, it explores the innovation landscape and currently commercially available products on the global cosmetic market and discusses the potential future applications of advanced, biologically inspired ingredients in the medical aesthetic industry. The dentistry industry has been modernized by nanotechnology, as this emerging field has opened up new doors for dental treatment, restoration, and tissue regeneration. The potential applications of nanomaterials in dentistry are reviewed in this paper, ranging from advanced restorative materials to targeted drug delivery systems. Due to their unique characteristics (e.g., high surface area-to-volume ratios and tunable physicochemical properties), nanomaterials allow for the precise control of material behavior at the nanoscale. The ability of nanostructured materials to promote tissue regeneration offers the prospect of developing new approaches in bone and periodontal regeneration. Therefore, this review thoroughly analyzes nanomaterials’ characteristics and biomedical applications, highlighting how they can aid in overcoming challenges in dental care and create possibilities for more individualized and less-invasive dental treatments. Efficient Headline Generation with Hybrid Attention for Long Texts

Headline generation aims to condense key information from an article or a document into a concise one-sentence summary. The Transformer structure is in general effective for such tasks, yet it suffers from a dramatic increase in training time and GPU consumption as the input text length grows. To address this problem, a hybrid attention mechanism is proposed. Both local and global semantic information among words are modeled in a way that significantly improves training efficiency, especially for long text. Effectiveness is not sacrificed; in fact, fluency and semantic coherence of the generated headlines are enhanced. Experimental results on an open benchmark dataset show that, compared to the baseline model’s best performance, the proposed model obtains a 14.7%, 16.7%, 14.4% and 9.1% increase in the F1 values of the ROUGE-1, the ROUGE-2, the ROUGE-L and the ROUGE-WE metrics, respectively. The semantic coherence of the generated text is also improved, as shown by a 2.8% improvement in the BERTScore’s F1 value. These results show that the effectiveness of the proposed headline generation model with the hybrid attention mechanism is also improved. The hybrid attention mechanism could provide references for relevant text generation tasks. Full article

Sperm DNA fragmentation (sDF) is a DNA damage able to predict natural conception. Thus, many laboratories added tests for the detection of sDF as an adjunct to routine semen analysis with specific indications. However, some points related to sDF are still open. The available tests are very different each from other, and a direct comparison, in terms of the prediction of reproductive outcomes, is mandatory. The proposed mechanisms responsible for sDF generation have not yielded treatments for men with high levels of sDF that have gained the general consent in clinical practice, thus requiring further research. Another relevant point is the biological meaning to attribute to sDF and, thus, what we can expect from tests detecting sDF for the diagnosis of male infertility. SDF can represent the “tip of iceberg” of a more extended and undetected sperm abnormality somehow impacting upon reproduction. Investigating the nature of such a sperm abnormality might provide novel insights into the link between sDF and reproduction. Finally, several studies reported an impact of native sDF on assisted reproduction technique outcomes. However, to fertilise the oocyte, selected spermatozoa are used where sDF, if present, associates with highly motile spermatozoa, which is the opposite situation to native semen, where most sDF associates with non-viable spermatozoa. Studies comparing the impact of sDF, as assessed in both native and selected spermatozoa, are needed. Full article
