Research on ecosystem services (ES) has become central to landscape planning, framing the relationship between people and nature. In Sub-Saharan regions, local communities rely heavily on wetlands for various ES. For the first time, we assessed perceptions of ES provided by these wetlands, focusing on marshes, peatlands, swamps, and inland valleys/floodplains in eastern DR Congo. Fieldwork combined with a survey of 510 households, using both open-ended and 35 direct questions, evaluated perceptions of wetland ecosystem services (WESs). The most frequently reported WES were provisioning (38%) and regulating (24%), while supporting (22%) and cultural (16%) were less mentioned. These perceptions varied across wetland types and among communities based on gender, religion, seniority in wetland use, land tenure, and educational level. Rural communities had a deep relationship with nature, shaped by cultural, economic, and geographical factors. Wetlands are viewed positively as sources of goods but also negatively as sources of diseases. A structural equation model (SEM) helped in identifying four latent variables—livelihood, knowledge, personal, and geographical factors—driving WES perceptions. These findings are relevant for developing wetland management policies and suggest including community engagement and collaboration in wetland restoration and regulatory frameworks. Full article

Geochronology and Geochemistry of the Uhelchulu Quartz Diorite-Granodiorite in Inner Mongolia of China: Implications for Evolution of the Hegenshan Ocean in the Early-Middle Devonian

The Uhelchulu quartz diorite-granodiorite intrusions in Xiwuqi, Inner Mongolia, are exposed along the northwestern margin of the Xilinhot microcontinental block, located within the central and eastern parts of the southeastern Hegenshan suture zone. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating yielded crystallization ages of (396 ± 8) Ma for the quartz diorite and (385 ± 5) Ma for the granodiorite, indicating an Early-Middle Devonian magmatic event. The quartz diorite exhibits I-type granite features, characterized by elevated Al2O3 (14.33–15.43 wt%), MgO (3.73–5.62 wt%), and Na (Na2O/K2O = 1.04–1.44), coupled with low P2O5 (0.15–0.20 wt%) and TiO2 (0.73–0.99 wt%). Trace element patterns show relative enrichments in Rb, Th, U, and Pb, while Nb, Ta, Sr and Ti are relatively depleted. Total REE contents are relatively low (123–178 ppm), with significant LREE enrichment (ΣLREE/ΣHREE = 4.75–5.20), and a non-obvious Eu anomaly (δEu = 0.75–0.84). In contrast, the granodiorite displays S-type granite characteristics, with high SiO2 (70.48–73.01 wt%), K (K2O/Na2O = 1.35–1.83), Al2O3 (A/CNK = 1.16–1.31), and a high differentiation index (DI = 76–82). Notably, MgO (1.44–2.24 wt%) contents are low, and significant depletions of Ba, Sr, Ti, and Eu are observed, while Rb, Pb, Th, U, Zr, and Hf are significantly enriched. Total REE contents are relatively low (178–314 ppm), exhibiting significant LREE enrichment (LREE/HREE = 6.17–8.36) and a pronounced negative Eu anomaly (δEu = 0.34–0.49). The overall characteristics point towards an active continental margin arc background for the Uhelchulu intrusions. Previous studies have suggested that the Hegenshan ocean continuously subducted northward from the Early Carboniferous to the Late Permian, but there is a lack of evidence for its geological evolution during the pre-Early Carboniferous. Therefore, this paper provides a certain basis for studying the geological evolution during the pre-Early Carboniferous in the Hegenshan ocean. We preliminarily believed that the Hegenshan ocean underwent a southward subduction towards the Xilinhot microcontinental block in the Xiwuqi area, at least from the Early Devonian to the Middle Devonian and the Hegenshan ocean may might have undergone a shift in subduction mechanism during the Late Devonian or Early Carboniferous. Understanding farmers’ perceptions, attitudes, and adaptation strategies toward climate change is important for developing effective policies that support agricultural development and food security in rural communities. This study aimed to understand climatic trends over the past two decades (2003–2022), farmers’ perceptions, and adaptation strategies regarding climate change in Dera Ghazi Khan, Pakistan. The Mann–Kendall trend test identified a significant decrease in average minimum temperature (τ = −0.357, p < 0.05) and an increase in rainfall patterns (τ = 0.337, p < 0.05). A mixed-method approach is employed, utilizing a survey of 180 randomly selected farmers, focus group discussions, and climate data analysis. Ordinal and binary logistic regression models were used to analyze the influence of sociodemographic factors on farmers’ perceptions of climate change and their choice of adaptation strategies. The results indicate that farmers primarily rely on religious beliefs/prayers (65.6%) to cope with climate change, followed by seeking off-farm jobs (50%) and changing fertilizer use (42.2%). The result of the binary logistic regression indicates that among the different demographic characteristics, education, and land size significantly influence farmers’ decisions in taking adaptation measures against climate change. This study emphasizes the need for climate policies that integrate farmer knowledge with meteorological data and sociodemographic analysis to ensure a sustainable agricultural sector in Pakistan. Structural planes are one of the key factors controlling the stability of rock masses. A comprehensive understanding of the spatial distribution characteristics of structural planes is essential for accurately identifying key blocks, analyzing rock mass stability, and addressing various rock engineering challenges. This study compares the effectiveness of four stochastic structural plane generation methods—the Monte Carlo method, the Copula-based method, generative adversarial networks (GAN), and denoised diffusion models (DDPM)—in generating stochastic structural planes and capturing potential correlations between structural plane parameters. The Monte Carlo method employs the mean and variance of three parameters of the measured factual structural planes to generate data that follow the same distributions. The other three methods take the entire set of measured factual structural planes as the overall input to generate structural planes that exhibit the same probability distributions. Five sets of structural planes on four rock slopes in Norway are examined as an example. The validation and analysis were performed using histogram comparison, data feature comparison, scatter plot comparison, and linear regression analysis. The results show that the Monte Carlo method fails to capture the potential correlation between the dip direction and dip angle despite the best fit to the measured factual structural planes. The Copula-based method performs better with smaller datasets, and GAN and DDPM are better at capturing the correlation of measured factual structural planes in the case of large datasets. Therefore, in the case of a limited number of measured structural planes, it is advisable to employ the Copula-based method. In scenarios where the dataset is extensive, the deep generative model is recommended due to its ability to capture complex data structures. The results of this study can be utilized as a valuable point of reference for the accurate generation of stochastic structural planes within rock masses. Full article

Cognitive-experiential self-theory is a unique model for exploring restaurant patrons’ decision making. Fear and its impact on diners’ decision making, particularly related to specific dining contexts (dine-in, takeout, and delivery), are limited in their representation in the literature. The COVID-19 pandemic provided an instance where a single fear could be explored universally for dining patrons. This study explores how fear influences diners’ perception of risk, antipathy, and avoidance toward restaurant dining and how these factors impact their intention to dine in a restaurant. Furthermore, it investigates how those constructs influence diner decision making regarding the selection of one of the identified dining contexts. Online survey data (n = 1225) of diners were analyzed using SEM. The research finds that fear impacts dining contexts differentially. Additionally, environmental control is identified as a valuable tool in the mitigation of diners’ fear. The pandemic had devastating impacts on the restaurant industry, partly due to the lack of research into fear, particularly in dining contexts. This research helps to fill the important research gap through the findings and theoretical and managerial implications provided. Full article

Soil erodibility (K) refers to the inherent ability of soil to withstand erosion. Accurate estimation and spatial prediction of K values are vital for assessing soil erosion and managing land resources. However, as most K-value estimation models are empirical, they suffer from significant extrapolation uncertainty, and traditional studies on spatial prediction focusing on individual empirical K values have neglected to explore the spatial pattern differences between various empirical models. This work proposed a universal framework for selecting an optimal soil-erodibility map using empirical models enhanced by machine learning. Specifically, three empirical models, namely, the erosion-productivity impact calculator model (K_EPIC), the Shirazi model (K_Shirazi), and the Torri model (K_Torri) were used to estimate K values. Random Forest (RF) and Gradient-Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) algorithms were employed to develop prediction models, which led to the creation of three K-value maps. The spatial distribution of K values and associated environmental covariates were also investigated across varying empirical models. Results showed that RF achieved the highest accuracy, with R2 of K_EPIC, K_Shirazi, and K_Torri increasing by 46%, 34%, and 22%, respectively, compared to GBDT. And distinctions among environmental variables that shape the spatial patterns of empirical models have been identified. The K_EPIC and K_Shirazi are influenced by soil porosity and soil moisture. The K_Torri is more sensitive to soil moisture conditions and terrain location. More importantly, our study has highlighted disparities in the spatial patterns across the three K-value maps. Considering the data distribution, spatial distribution, and measured K values, the K_Torri model outperformed others in estimating soil erodibility in the plateau lake watershed. This study proposed a framework that aimed to create optimal soil-erodibility maps and offered a scientific and accurate K-value estimation method for the assessment of soil erosion. Full article

During the dry season, river flow gradually diminishes, and surface water flow dries up. Therefore, the investigation of runoff during the dry season is of great practical significance for rational water allocation and water resource management. Based on hydrological station data from the Xijiang River Basin (XRB) from 1961 to 2020, this study examines the trend and periodic characteristics of dry-season runoff, identifies fluctuation and variability in dry-season runoff, and investigates the main circulation factor combinations influencing dynamic changes in dry-season runoff. The results indicate the following: (1) the characteristics of dry-season runoff variations are basically consistent across sub-basins in the XRB during the study period, with the minimum (21.96 × 108 m3) and maximum (54.67 × 108 m3) average monthly runoff occurring in February and October, respectively; (2) interannual-scale dry-season runoff exhibits periodicity of 3.53 years and 7.5 years; (3) using the Bayesian estimator of abrupt seasonal and trend change algorithm (BEAST), a seasonal abrupt point with a probability of 20.5% occurs in 1983, and the confidence interval for this abrupt point is from 1980 to 1986; (4) based on the cross wavelet approach, solar sunspots are identified as the primary circulation factor contributing to dry-season runoff in the XRB, exhibiting a significant 8–14 years resonance cycle of negative correlation with runoff during the high-energy phase from 1972 to 2006. These findings offer a new perspective on understanding the evolution of dry-season runoff and circulation factor variations, which are crucial for accurate prediction, early warning, and rational allocation of water resources during the dry season. Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a group of chronic infectious diseases of poverty affecting over one billion people globally. Intersections of NTDs, disability, and mental ill-health are increasingly evidenced but are rarely studied from a mixed-methods perspective. Here, we advance syndemic understandings by further assessing and contextualising the syndemic relationship between NTDs (particularly their associated disability) and mental distress in Liberia. Participatory qualitative methods, including body mapping (56 participants), social mapping (28 participants), and in-depth interviews (12) provided space for persons affected by NTDs to narrate their experiences. Simultaneously, 201 surveys explored experiences of common mental health conditions among persons affected by skin NTDs. An intersectionality approach was applied within the analysis for both qualitative and quantitative methods informed by Meyer’s minority stress model, adapted for NTDs. Qualitative data was analysed thematically and gender-disaggregated, univariable and multivariable analyses were applied to survey data for the outcome measures depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7). Disability was associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety (p < 0.001). An interaction between disability and being a women increased incidence risk ratio of depression (p < 0.001). In alignment with qualitative findings, persons affected experienced additional generalised (financial concerns), external (experience of stigma) and internal (experience of pain and physical symptoms) minority stressors, to varying degrees, which contributed towards their mental distress, and mental health conditions. These findings were used to co-develop a syndemic-informed person-centred health system response to address the suffering associated with NTDs and mental distress, including a focus on strengthening relationships between formal and informal community health actors and the broader health system. Applying information technology capabilities (ITC) to business processes is critical in the current data and information age. However, various bottlenecks and barriers restrict the adoption of ITC. To address these obstacles, fostering an entrepreneurial orientation (EO) can be beneficial. Drawing on the dynamic capabilities view, this study develops and tests a model that empirically analyzes how EO influences the adoption of ITC. The proposed model also assesses the separate and joint effects of EO and ITC on firm performance (FP). The research hypotheses were tested using a survey of 157 Chilean firms, and the PLS-SEM method was applied. The findings indicate that EO promotes the development of ITC and that the synergistic relationship between the two positively affects FP. These findings provide valuable insight for managers in terms of aligning their strategic approach with technological capabilities to enhance their company’s success. Full article

Stem Rust Resistance and Resistance-Associated Genes in 64 Wheat Cultivars from Southern Huanghuai, China

Wheat stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), is a devastating fungal disease that affects wheat globally. The planting of resistant cultivars is the most cost-effective strategy for controlling this disease. The Huanghuai region, as a major wheat-growing area, plays a crucial role in the spread and prevalence of wheat stem rust in China. In this study, 64 wheat accessions from this region were tested at the adult stage against two major Pgt races, 34MKGQM and 21C3CTHQM. DNA markers associated with the known resistance genes Sr31, Sr24, Sr25, Sr26, and Sr38 were measured to determine their presence in the tested accessions. In the 2023 field tests, 5 (7.8%) accessions were immune to 21C3CTHQM and 34MKGQM, while 35 (54.7%) and 39 (60.9%) were moderately resistant and resistant, respectively. The remaining 20 (30.7%) accessions were moderately susceptible and susceptible. In the 2024 tests, 12 (18.8%) and 14 (21.9%) entries were immune to both races; 29 (45.3%) and 30 (46.9%) were moderately resistant and resistant, respectively. Only two cultivars, Xinong 816 and Yimai 211, were immune in both years, and three entries showed some degrees of resistance in both years. Seven cultivars, including Zhongzhimai 23, Longxing 1, Yunong 937, Huaguan 301, Wanke 800, Shaanhe 285, and Yunong 612, showed increased susceptibility. DNA markers showed that 30 entries carried Sr31, while 6 entries carried Sr38. Genes Sr24, Sr25, and Sr26, which confer good resistance to the globally prevalent cultivars TKTTF and TTTRF, were absent from the set of tested entries. While this study surveyed the resistance levels of a cross-section of wheat from the southern part of the Huanghuai region and confirmed the presence of two known resistance genes, the basis of immunity or high levels of resistance in several lines remains obscure. To protect the safety of food bought from the online catering sector, the former State Food and Drug Administration of China issued two separate regulations in 2016 and 2017. To protect the safety of food bought from the online catering sector, the former State Food and Drug Administration of China issued two separate regulations in 2016 and 2017. Independently, the Shanghai government formulated local regulations, including the Shanghai Online Catering Service Supervision and Management Measures, to strengthen food safety supervision in this megacity with the largest catering sector in China. This study explored factors that influence consumer perceptions of the performance of online catering food safety regulations using survey data from 1050 respondents collected in 2019. The results indicate that consumers believe that Shanghai’s online catering industry has improved by varying degrees in terms of food freshness, ingredient traceability, foreign matter control, food temperature control, internal packaging hygiene and environmental protection, and satisfaction with food safety. The factors that influenced the listed features include the number and effectiveness of government-issued regulations regarding the online catering sector, effectiveness of ordering platform food safety regulations, employee training frequency, employee food safety awareness, delivery box cleanliness and courier personal hygiene, consumer trust in ordering platform services, and consumer confidence in government supervision. These factors significantly and positively affected the consumers’ perceptions of the performance of food safety regulations in the online catering sector. Full article

A new Cyrtodactylus species, C. laevissp. nov., from the dry-hot valleys near the Yarlung Zangbo River in Re Village, Jindong Countryside, Lang County, Linzhi City, Xizang Autonomous Region, China, is described herein based upon the integrative taxonomic results combining molecular phylogenetic systematics and morphological characteristic comparisons. Our molecular phylogeny was inferred by combining three mitochondrial gene fragments (16S/CO1/ND2), and it indicated a distinct differentiation between the new species and C. tibetanus species complex, with obvious genetic distances (16S 9.9–11.8%/CO1 16.5–18.2%/ND2 16.6–18.5%) detected, supporting its validity. Morphologically, the new species can be easily distinguished from its congers by the following characters: (1) medium size (SVL 48.58–50.92 mm), (2) tubercles on dorsum sparse, (3) tail segments absent and tubercles on tails absent, (4) supralabials 10–12 and infralabials 8–10, (5) interorbital scales between anterior corners of the eyes 28–32, (6) scale rows at midbody 96–98, (7) ventral scales between mental and cloacal slit 145–153, (8) ventral scale rows 41–45, and (9) 4 to 5 white–yellow transverse bands with brown dots and black merges between the nape and sacrum. The description of C. laevis sp. nov. increased the total species number of C. tibetanus group to three, and the total Cyrtodactylus species number in Xizang to six and in China to eleven. The new species is currently only known from the type locality with its extremely small populations and needs future surveys to reveal its distribution range, population status, natural history, and mechanisms so that the new species can coexist with Altiphylax medogense. Exploring Stress and Coping in Caregivers of Children with Pulmonary Vein Stenosis: A Mixed-Method Study

(1) Background: This mixed-method study aims to identify and describe factors associated with acute and long-term parenting stressors and coping strategies in caregivers of children with intraluminal pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS). (2) Methods: Parents of children with severe PVS were recruited from a large quaternary hospital to complete a survey that included demographics, the Pediatric Inventory for Parents (PIP), and the Coping Health Inventory for Parents (CHIP). We determined the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) based on self-reported home address. A subset of caregivers completed a 60 min semi-structured interview via Zoom exploring the impact their child’s diagnosis had on their family; experience managing stress in the hospital and at home; current resources and processes for coping; and potential recommendations for hospitals to build resilience and coping. We used multivariable linear regression to examine the association between SVI and parental stress and coping while adjusting for possible confounders. Thematic analysis identified themes related to stress and coping. Finally, we assessed instances of convergence and difference between the qualitative and quantitative results. (3) Results: Participants included 32 caregivers who were 91% female with a mean age of 39 years. The children of participants were 66% female, with a mean age of five years. The parents reported a high amount of stress with an average PIP score of 120, nearly 46 points higher than similar studies in the congenital heart community. We observed no significant associations between SVI and either parental stress or coping in adjusted models. We identified 13 themes, including medical care, hospital, family, support systems, and home medical routine or support. (4) Conclusions: Our study found high levels of illness-related parental stress among caregivers of children with PVS. Stress evolved over time from what caregivers described as ‘survival mode’ to a future-oriented outlook. Currently, caregivers rely heavily on support networks that are not available to all caregivers or may experience strain over time. Caregivers indicated that communication and parental role functioning were coping strategies that could be better supported by providers and health systems. Full article

Measuring Self-Efficacy for Exercise among Older Adults: Psychometric Properties and Measurement Invariance of a Brief Version of the Self-Efficacy for Exercise (SEE) Scale

(1) Background: Physical activity is known to promote health and psychological well-being in older adults, yet global inactivity rates in this population remain high. Among the factors associated with physical activity, self-efficacy for exercise represents a key predictor for developing effective interventions in older adults. This study aimed to validate the Self-Efficacy for Exercise Scale (SEE) in individuals over 65. (2) Methods: A sample of 726 older adults from the USA and Italy (51.1% females; age range = 65–95 years; Mage = 72.57, SDage = 6.49) completed the SEE, along with the Godin–Shepard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (GSLTPAQ), the Big Five Inventory 2—Extra Short Form (BFI-2-XS), and the 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). (3) Results: The SEE showed a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.88 and a Composite Reliability of 0.89. Moreover, it demonstrated a unidimensional factor structure and good fit indices. Full measurement invariance was achieved across gender and age, while partial scalar invariance was found across countries, suggesting minor cultural differences. Correlation with the GSLTPAQ, the BFI-2-XS, and the SF-12 support the convergent and nomological validity of the SEE. (4) Conclusions: These findings provide evidence that the SEE is a reliable and valid measure of self-efficacy for exercise among older adults and that the items are interpreted similarly across different ages, genders, and cultures. Energy poverty (EP) is a crucial socio-economic problem in current society, as it deprives people of a basic standard of living and quality of life. In general, EP is linked to various factors, but it is primarily associated with high energy costs, low household income, and inefficient building structures. Due to the recent energy crisis in Europe, the importance of these factors has escalated. Bearing in mind the above remarks, the REVERTER EU-funded LIFE project will develop and test nine roadmaps in four European countries (Brezovo—Bulgaria; Athens Urban area—Greece; Riga—Latvia; and Coimbra—Portugal) to alleviate EP by addressing the poor energy efficiency of dwellings. To directly observe real-life scenarios in designated pilot regions, questionnaire surveys were conducted, involving approximately 300 households in each pilot area. This paper presents and evaluates the outcomes of the survey conducted in the central region of Portugal. The findings allow for a deeper comprehension of the factors that impact energy poverty in Portugal, spanning socio-economic aspects, housing characteristics, mechanical systems, energy expenses, and behaviors, as well as the awareness of available support initiatives. Drawing from the survey’s insights, novel strategies are suggested to alleviate energy poverty, with a primary emphasis on crafting tailored, efficient policies that address the genuine requirements of households and individuals.
