Downing Street has cooled on plans to cut inheritance tax and are looking now at income tax and National Insurance.

The PM, writing exclusively for The Sun on Sunday, dangled the prospect of more tax cuts as he vowed to “reward” hard work.

He added: “Where we can, we will always prioritise tax cuts to put more of people’s money back in their pockets.”

Mr Sunak said the economy “is beginning to turn a corner” and warned that Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer could blow these gains with his £28billion green “spending spree”.

He said: “Starmer can’t say how he is going to pay for this spending — which is twice what we spend on the police in England — because he doesn’t have a plan.

"And because he doesn’t have a plan for how to pay for it, he’d have to put up your taxes to cover the costs.”

He added: “The choice is clear — tax cuts with us or tax rises with Starmer.”

Mr Sunak also accused Labour of talking Britain down and being “hellbent on sabotaging” his attempts to control our borders and get Rwanda flights in the air.

No10 has been considering slashing inheritance tax to create a divide when it comes to the next election.

But several Cabinet ministers have privately voiced concerns it would look like a giveaway to the rich and stressed the need to prioritise cuts for workers.

Meanwhile, Tory analysis reveals Labour have voted against £6,095 of tax cuts since 2010.

They voted against eight Finance Acts that have raised the personal tax allowance.

Treasury Minister Nigel Huddleston said: “Labour’s record shows they have tried to block over £6,000 worth of tax cuts the Conservatives have brought forward to reward hard work.”

But Labour’s shadow treasury minister Darren Jones said: “This Tory government is the highest taxing government of all time in this country and no amount of double-speak will make people forget that. The Tories have failed.”
