Boris Johnson announces sanctions for Russia over invasion of Ukraine

Germany halts Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as Putin orders troops and tanks into Ukraine’s breakaway eastern regions

Boris Johnson outlined a new wave of sanctions against Moscow today as Germany blocked the approval of the key Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia.

In a statement to the Commons the prime minister said that the UK would extend British sanctions to a further five Russian banks and three “high net wealth’’ individuals.

Those targeted include Gennady Timchenko, a billionaire who controls the Volga Group, Boris Rotenberg, a co-owner of SMP Bank, and his nephew, Igor Rotenberg, who are already sanctioned by the US.

Ministers later announced that the UK would also introduce legislation allowing the government to ban the issuing and trading of Russian sovereign debt on UK markets.
