This plaster cast was taken from the copy by Filippo della Valle in white marble after an antique statue, made for the Dining Room at Syon House. The figure has traditionally been identified as a muse, possibly Euterpe, Muse of Music or Urania, Muse of Astronomy. The marble by Della Valle was commissioned by the Adam brothers for Syon House, the Thames-side residence of the Duke of Northumberland. The statue was carved in Rome, along with a figure of Flora based on the antique original in the Capitoline Museum. A letter from James Adam in Rome to his sister in London indicates that both were ready for delivery by January 1763. This plaster copy was commissioned to replace those formerly at Kenwood in the 18th century.
