🆕 China is often credited with a successful application of industrial policy. One important particularity of China’s industrial policy is that it aims at levelling the playing field between the state economy and the private economy in access to finance, yet within a framework of strategic goals. This aim is not relevant for market economies, such as those of the European Union, but only for those where state enterprises are clearly privileged. Notwithstanding the difficulties in making valid comparisons, Alicia Garcia-Herrero 艾西亞 and Robin Schindowski's analysis of how China conducts industrial policy in a variety of sectors points to success in some sectors but not all. 🆕 In this First Glance, David Pinkus gives an overview of the debate on pension reforms in Germany and argues that while reform is welcome, the costs of diversifying sources of income for pay-as-you-go pension schemes in the face of ageing populations should not fall as a burden on younger generations https://lnkd.in/gdM9mfn3

🎙 NATO and the EU - who does what for European defence? "So I think there are a lot of questions out there, in terms of the key role that NATO has to play in setting, developing and enforcing military standards, in setting the priority requirements when it comes to capabilities and readiness and force structure, and also when it comes to developing and strengthening the transatlantic, defense industrial base, because ultimately, this is we face global issues both as NATO and as the EU. We have a global defense industry. And at the time when we see Russia and other authoritarian countries coming closer and closer together, including importing weapons that Russia can use against Ukraine, it makes no sense for democracies to drift apart. I think this is a time for all of us to invest in what keeps us together."
