Austerity threatens firefighters - protect their lives! 🔥 This Workers' Memorial Day #IWMD24, we honour the brave firefighters who risk their lives every day. In addition to daily exposure to carcinogenic substances like #asbestos and PFAS, they also have to face climate-related disasters like forest fires and floods. We have to protect them. #Austerity threatens their safety and puts both firefighters and communities at risk. We stand in #solidarity and call for more staff & public funding to protect those who protect us. Help #firefighters to help others!

📣 New publication alert! ✂️ Check our new case study on #WorkingTimeReduction - this month's spotlight: #Spain 🇪🇸 and #Portugal 🇵🇹. 🇪🇸 In Spain, #publicsector workers negotiate reduced working time amid legal and economic challenges. ◾️After the government introduced 37,5 hours minimum working week in 2012, unions took to the streets - from #protests to negotiations, relentless efforts paid off, and by 2023, several regions had successfully reintroduced the 35-hour week through negotiations - more regions following. 🇵🇹 Portugal's public sector faces challenges but sees rapid progress in restoring the 35-hour week. ◾️In 2013, legislation increased normal working hours for public sector workers from 35 to 40 hours per week. The unions fought back and the new legislation reinstated the 35-hour working week in the public sector in 2016, marking a monumental victory for labour rights in the country. 📣 #Austerity is back on the table: Fightback is the only solution! #EuropeanParliament adopted the new #economic governance rules. EPSU General Secretary Jan Willem Goudriaan said, "Many countries will have to cut the number of nurses, firefighters, care workers, tax inspectors & more while public services are already suffering from staff shortages." For sure, it's not going to help #Europe. We'll keep fighting for jobs & #publicservices. Read our press release here👇🏾

👉🏾This is the last warning before today's vote in the #EuropeanParliament: #Austerity fuels far-right. Past cuts to public services and social safety nets have fueled the rise of #farright. Let's learn from history – say no to austerity.
