Scientists have shown that depression and cardiovascular disease share part of their developmental programs, having at least one functional ‘gene module’ in common. This result, published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, provides new markers for depression and CVD, and could ultimately help to find drugs to target both diseases. We need #OpenScience to unleash the power of research and reassure the public's trust in science to usher in an ecologically sustainable world and avert an irreversible climate crisis. The Open Science Charter is a critical call to action for researchers, governments, universities, research institutions, research funders, and industry leaders to embrace open science to unlock a future without boundaries to scientific knowledge. We urgently appeal to you. Read and sign the Open Science Charter ➡️ https://fro.ntiers.in/m1MG #FrontiersforClimate

Patentability in the age of AI and machine learning raises critical questions about defining the person having ordinary skills in the art (PHOSITA). While education and experience matter, so does access to tools. Jordana Goodman of Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology calls on judges and examiners alike to continually engage in better defining PHOSITA. Jean-Claude Burgelman, director of the Frontiers Planet Prize, addresses the urgent need for transformational science in achieving a 'Green Renaissance': "We need to mobilize the world of science to invest much more resources than what is currently being invested into transformational science, and by making the results of this global scientific challenge, largely funded by public resources, available to a maximum number of people so that new ideas and findings can be picked up as soon as possible." Climate change poses an existential threat to society. Despite the severity of the situation, much of the knowledge needed to prevent the world from reaching an irreversible tipping point is not accessible. ❌ Out of the four million scientific articles published each year, 61% remains locked away behind subscription paywalls, including the majority of research related to climate change. Limiting access to this research hinders the speed at which policymakers, companies, and researchers can collaborate and innovate to bring about the solutions we so urgently need. Science is not only a source of information, but also a catalyst for progress and transformation. #OpenScience, accessible to all citizens, is a prerequisite for effective #ClimateAction, so that this research can be translated into new technology and deployed. With the support of our many partners, including United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC UN), World Economic Forum, The Villars Institute, and GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator, we can further our mission.
