I attended my first #allears by Spotify last week. I got the chance to meet many new faces and was part of the platform panel discussion. Time to reflect: 🦺 Playing it safe The podcast industry in Germany is growing, but this growth is concentrated in very large formats. Innovative projects struggle as funding sources opt for low-risk, high return investments. 👩💼 Over-reliance on ad monetization The German ecosystem is increasingly dependent on advertising income. This raises entry barriers for non-host driven formats, benefiting a few large shows. 📢 Limits of reach To attract the top advertisers, creators limit their artistic freedom, which reduces innovation and content diversity. This leads to a few formats benefiting while others struggle to gain large audiences. 💡What we can do? It's time to broaden the monetization options for creators. At Podimo we are convinced that we need both: A strong ad monetization model in combination with a deep consumer-based monetization model (subscriptions). There are significant benefits by monetising listeners: 1. Predictable income: Recurring revenue from subscribers. 2. Content innovation: Freedom to create content that caters to the interests of the listener. 3. Improved listener connection: Strengthens bond with dedicated listeners. 4. Higher value perception: Exclusive content increases the perceived value to listeners. 5. Target audience reach over total reach: Relevant audience reach and loyalty of audiences determines the monetization potential. Podcast subscriptions can bring fresh resources into the ecosystem, drive innovative formats and talent development, protect podcasters against market fluctuations, and improve the consumer listening experience.
