We think outside the box to find sustainable approaches to the use and reuse of building materials. In our new video series ‘Outside the Box’ we deliver a mystery box to Graham Dodd, Arup Fellow. Inside the box, Graham finds some objects – an egg timer, a tyre-grooving tool and a double-glazed window unit. Using each object inside the box, Graham shows us a simple and effective way to recover, reuse and recycle glass – a playful demonstration of Arup’s long held passion for the circular economy and sustainable approach to using materials. Arup Fellows are exceptional practitioners with a deep commitment to delivering excellence for our clients on our projects today, while helping our clients prepare for opportunities and challenges in the future. They have a special role at Arup to inspire and enable our people to be creative and innovative in their work. They bring a willingness to embrace uncertainty and complexity, and work to solve the intractable challenges needed to build a sustainable future for all. The #builtenvironment is responsible for 15% of fresh water use and is a key player in addressing the issue. Still, it is one of the most overlooked aspects of building, architecture and construction. Here are some key takeaways from our webinars: 🔵 One in six Chinese cities is sinking at a rate of 1 cm per year due to 2024over pumping of water. This is also happening in the United States and other parts of the world. 🔵 In Western countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, people use around 1,100 litres of water to prepare breakfast. 🔵 The construction industry plays a key role in encouraging the appropriate use of water. Potable water is a human need while most activities for construction could use recycled water. 🔵 Potable water impacts our lives not only as a finite resource but also in terms of carbon emissions. 💻 You can watch the recordings of both sessions here: Morning session: https://bit.ly/4b9rV9b Afternoon session: https://bit.ly/3wqCcPc #BuildingTheTransition

How can we bring the science industry and research facilities to our high-streets? Located in the heart of London, the Francis Crick Institute is a great example of how research facilities can be part of the fabric of our city centres. After working with architects HOK and PLP Architecture on the original building inaugurated in 2016, we are now creating its new space called Skylab. Adding further laboratory facilities on the roof, Skylab will host MSD scientists who are currently working in the building. Their input has been key to shaping its design and creating a space that will meet their specific requirements, enabling them to work in an environment tailored to their needs. How can repurposing industrial land pave the way for a sustainable urban future? In collaboration with EBRD and local authorities, we transformed 28 hectares of former industrial space adjacent to the city centre in Šibenik, Croatia, into a vibrant urban hub. Prioritising active mobility, we've enhanced pedestrian and cycling paths and expanded public areas along the waterfront and Banj beach. Our approach incorporates a low-carbon design, emphasising energy efficiency and renewable energy usage. Explore how we offered more recreational opportunities and fostered a stronger connection between the local community and the city's natural resources here: https://bit.ly/3wqxb9j #UrbanRegeneration #ActiveMobility #Sustainability

We are delighted to be back at #UKREiiF in Leeds this year, leading conversations on innovation, intelligence, and how we can collaborate to create inclusive and equitable places. You’ll find our team sharing their insights and expertise on panel discussions across the three days: Ben Pritchard, Cardiff Office Leader is chairing a panel discussion exploring how the UK can ensure communities once central to our energy network, are not left behind in the march to net zero. Sophie Camburn, Director for Cities, Planning and Design joins a panel to discuss opportunities across Central South. Angeliki Stogia, Associate, Stakeholder Engagement and Communications will co-lead an interactive session, Calling all Voices: an exploration into the future of inclusive stakeholder engagement. Anne Parkes, leader in Social Value & Equity, will co-lead Calling all Voices, and provide her knowledge in a conversation on unlocking social value through landscape led design. #UKREiiF24 #Innovation #Inclusion #Equity #Diveristy #WeareArup UKREiiF

As cities continue to grow, how can urban farming help create more resilient places? We believe that integrating food into urban projects, whether in new or intensified neighbourhoods, has the potential to increase the health of both people and the planet. Through masterplanning, we’re exploring diverse approaches to urban farming and how development projects of any scale can and should incorporate food growing. Our playbook for food and masterplanning helps our teams to responsibly and rigorously integrate food growing into a scheme, outlining the range of benefits this approach offers to developers, local authorities and wider communities. We're thrilled to share that we've strengthened ties with TotalEnergies under a Master Services Agreement to drive forward the global energy transition. Our mission? To support the energy company’s global ambition to develop 100GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The agreement builds on the existing relationship between the two organisations, having previously worked together on offshore wind and solar energy projects in markets around the world. According to our Global Technical Leader for Wind, Graeme McCann: "The next decade will be immensely important for renewable energy capacity development, with the planned build-out only possible through increased collaboration in the energy sector. We’re excited to work with TotalEnergies, who share our ambition to drive forward the energy transition, and we look forward to combining our skills and experience in developing renewable energy projects globally." We are delighted to announce that the Poblacion (Laguna Lake) Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in the Philippines scooped Water Project of the Year at the Global Water Summit 2024, for its exceptional innovation in optimising its physical and environmental footprint. Building on the global success of our involvement in the Putatan WTP 2 and La Mesa WTP 1 upgrades, we have successfully brought this large-scale Poblacion WTP to life, contributing to the resilience of water supplies for 6m people in Metro Manila’s West Zone. Through the joint venture of ACCIONA and D.M. CONSUNJI, INC. (DMCI) for Maynilad Water Services, Inc. we have supported the project from its conceptualisation to commissioning. Leveraging our expertise from other local projects and international experience in process design, we have delivered integrated design and construction solutions that ensure the optimal operation of the plant. Congratulations to the project team, as well as our client and contractor teams, on this remarkable achievement!
