We are excited to announce Italy's 🇮🇹 new policy initiative for trustworthy AI: In line with the OECD AI Principles, Italy plans to establish a national AI strategy ensuring the instrument is applied "with respect for the autonomy and decision-making power" of human beings. Italy is developing two AI initiatives: The Italian Strategy on AI for 2024–2026 and a draft law on artificial intelligence. See the first draft of the legislation 👉https://lnkd.in/emMSVP7Z Digital Italy (AGID - Agenzia per l'Italia Digitale) and the Department for Digital Transformation of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers prepared the strategy. The strategy will be developed along four sectors: Scientific Research, Public Administration, Enterprises and Education. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says she will prioritise AI-related issues during Italy's G7 presidency, which lasts until the end of this year. Visit our blog, the AI Wonk: https://oecd.ai/wonk/ The OECD AI Policy Observatory is a tool at the disposal of governments and businesses that they can use to implement the first intergovernmental standard on AI: the OECD AI Principles. The OECD AI Principles focus on how governments and other actors can shape a human-centric approach to trustworthy AI. The Observatory includes a blog for its group of international AI experts (ONE AI) to discuss issues related to defining AI and how to implement the OECD Principles. OECD countries adopted the standards in May 2019, along with a range of partner economies. The OECD AI Principles provided the basis for the G20 AI Principles endorsed by Leaders in June 2019. OECD.AI combines resources from across the OECD, its partners and all stakeholder groups. OECD.AI facilitates dialogue between stakeholders while providing multidisciplinary, evidence-based policy analysis in the areas where AI has the most impact. As an inclusive platform for public policy on AI – the OECD AI Policy Observatory is oriented around three core attributes: Multidisciplinarity The Observatory works with policy communities across and beyond the OECD – from the digital economy and science and technology policy, to employment, health, consumer protection, education and transport policy – to consider the opportunities and challenges posed by current and future AI developments in a coherent, holistic manner. Evidence-based analysis The Observatory provides a centre for the collection and sharing of evidence on AI, leveraging the OECD’s reputation for measurement methodologies and evidence-based analysis. Global multi-stakeholder partnerships The Observatory engages governments and a wide spectrum of stakeholders – including partners from the technical community, the private sector, academia, civil society and other international organisations – and provides a hub for dialogue and collaboration.

Innovation in AI increasingly rests not just on talent and research capacity but on the robustness of computational infrastructure. #Canada 🇨🇦, celebrated for its pioneering spirit in AI research and development, now faces a pivotal challenge: the AI compute (AIC) gap. This gap could affect Canada’s standing on the global stage and raises questions about inclusive and sustainable economic growth. This week, the government announced a $2.4 billion investment to cultivate domestic AI infrastructure and realign itself with peer nations. Last month, Canadian think tank The Dais at Toronto Metropolitan University released a report outlining Canada’s policy options to close the AI compute gap. Here, Graham 📊 Dobbs and Jake Hirsch-Allen discuss their main findings and use the OECD’s framework of national computing infrastructure to understand Canada’s AIC capacity, its effectiveness and resilience challenges. Should the newly created Artificial Intelligence Office be given further responsibility? Or does it have too much? Is the industry ready to comply with this set of rules and how can a fair competition be maintained? Are there gaps in AI literacy where regulators need to catch up? How can they be addressed and would policymakers benefit from further training? What is the right balance between regulating generative AI and innovation? To what extent are existing EU privacy/copyright/digital laws adequate to put guardrails around Generative AI alongside the AI Act – and if they are not, why not? In a digital era where AI permeates every facet of life, trust is not just a value—it’s an imperative. Recognising this, the UK government launched a Portfolio of AI Assurance Techniques through its Responsible Technology Adoption Unit (RTA), part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). It comprises a suite of practical case studies demonstrating AI assurance in action across diverse sectors. At the same time, the OECD Catalogue of Tools and Metrics for Trustworthy AI has become a central hub for sharing and finding AI tools and good practices for developing and using AI responsibly. Case studies from the Portfolio will be featured in the Catalogue to enhance international cooperation and promote good AI assurance practices. This collaboration marks a significant step toward operationalising trust in AI technologies. Read this post by James Scott and Luis Aranda to know more.
