New green waste site at Mont Cuet can handle 4,000 tonnes

GUERNSEY Waste is optimistic that its new green waste site at Mont Cuet will be able to handle approximately 4,000 tonnes dropped off by islanders every year.

The facility, which will operate as an open drop-off area, is set to open on Wednesday.

It has moved due to Ronez opening a quarry at its previous site at Chouet.

Among the new site’s features include a concrete floor, seven parking bays – including one for cars with trailers – and 144 large concrete blocks around the site’s perimeter.

It will be open from 10am to 6pm Monday to Sunday during the summer, except on Thursdays, while from 27 October and during the winter months it will be open from 10am to 4pm,

Saturday to Monday.

Guernsey Waste senior technical adviser Rob Roussel was hopeful that the site would be able to cope with the volume of traffic arriving each day, despite it being smaller in size than its predecessor.

‘There is less depth to work with so we will have to be careful with not letting it overflow, but the concrete floor has made the surface more even and that will mean there will be less contamination when the waste is picked up by our team,’ he said.

‘Each morning a team will be out clearing the site between 8am and 10am before it opens to the public, and we will be employing an extra member of staff to help marshal traffic.’

He said that working with Ronez during the relocation had been amicable and productive, adding that both companies would be sharing many of the facilities in the surrounding area.

‘We are happy with how things have turned out, we’ve worked very closely with Ronez and have spent a lot of time planning how it will all work.

‘There will no doubt be things to learn and improve on once the site is up and running, but I’m sure people will be thrilled with the new area. I’m confident it will make a big difference.’
