In a context of structural technological change, the International Initiative on Information and Democracy aims at bringing democratic guarantees to the global communication and information space.
This initiative is a structural response to the global information chaos that is threatening democracy, universal freedoms and the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Initiative has led to two main outcomes:
- The endorsement of the International Partnership on Information and Democracy by 51 countries which defines the principles of the global communication and information space and calls structuring platforms to implement them.
- The creation of the Forum on Information and Democracy by 11 organisations from civil society to expand these principles and issue concrete recommendations for regulation and self-regulation.
Partnership for Information & Democracy
The International Partnership for Information and Democracy is an intergovernmental non-binding agreement endorsed by 51 countries around the world to promote and implement democratic principles in the global information and communication space. It was formally signed during the 74th UN General Assembly in September 2019.
This Partnership was based on the International Declaration on Information & Democracy, published by an international Commission composed of Nobel laureates, journalists, activists and scholars.
Forum on Information & Democracy
The Forum on Information and Democracy is a non-profit entity led by civil society organisations and mandated to implement democratic principles from the International Partnership on Information and Democracy.
It is independent, represents different fields of expertise and continents and gathers various categories of stakeholders from governments, civil society, private sector and the media.
It defines and facilitates international multi-disciplinary working groups composed of experts and scholars. Its final objective is to issue recommendations and follow up on their implementation by the different stakeholders.
Working Groups
The working groups of the Forum gather experts from different field and regions to draft concrete recommendations for the regulation and self regulation of the global information and communication space.
Through this process, the Forum aims at filling the gap between research and policy that often prevents adapted and timely responses to the information disorder.
The Forum defines the scope, objectives, resources and deliverables of the different working groups.
