Sexual reproduction, which produces a large number of oospores, is an essential stage of the life cycle of oomycetes. The oospores are thick-walled, making them highly resistant to environmental influences and they can survive for several years. This study highlights CRISPR/CAS9-mediated genetic manipulation technologies and an RNA-binding protein-mediated molecular mechanism that will help to elucidate this key biological process.
