Poxviruses, including smallpox and monkeypox, carry two proteinaceous structures called lateral bodies. During assembly, viral immunomodulatory proteins are packaged into these structures and subsequently released into newly infected cells during virus entry. Using this strategy, poxviruses begin to combat host cell defenses prior to initiating viral gene expression.
