USS Philadelphia decommissioned in Conn.

The USS Philadelphia, a Los Angeles class attack submarine, was decommissioned today during a ceremony in New London, Connecticut. The occasion was bittersweet. Today also marked the 33-year anniversary of the vessel, which was commissioned June 25, 1977.

"It reached the end of its life span," said Navy spokesman Steven Myers. "Until it was decommissioned, it was the oldest submarine in the force."

The last cruise for the nuclear-powered sub will be to Norfolk, Va., where it will be dismantled and recycled.

Rear Admiral Douglas J. McAneny, the seventh commanding officer of the Philadelphia, was on hand to pay a final visit and eat one more meal in the wardroom.

"The soul of USS Philadelphia lives on forever in her crews," said McAneny, now Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. "We gather today not only to recognize the important role played by the leaders, the crew members, and the families but to say goodbye to our boat – USS Philadelphia."

How about we bring this to Penn's landing as a museum and get rid of the ancient Olympia.

How about we sell it to China and use the money to pay down some debt!

How about we remove the reactor and nuclear material, fill it with the latest 200 of Philly's miscreants, murderers, rapists, pedophiles and vicious drug dealers, tow it to the center of the ocean and sink it!

I think that if we back it correctly we can fit the requested 400.

How about we tax it to death like everything else in Philadelphia?

How about we make moronic comments that are completely irrelevant to the article, but only show how much we hate Philadelphia though, for some reason, we continue to live here?

"Thirty-three-year anniversary"? Do you mean the thirty-third anniversary? I don't see how you can be a professional newspaper writer without knowing what "anniversary" means.

In the 235-year history of the US Navy, there have been six ships named "USS Philadelphia". They saw action in the Revolutionary War, the undeclared 1798 war with France, the Civil War, and World War II. All this according to Wikipedia.
