Friday Cable Ratings: Discovery's 'Gold Rush' Tops Cable + 'Friday Night Smackdown,' 'Sanctuary,' 'Boss' & More

The season premiere of Discovery's Gold Rush (formerly Gold Rush: Alaska) led the night with a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating. Don't be confused by the second place "Gold Rush Alaska" and it's 1.0 in the table below, it was a special in-between seasons prelude episode  "The Off-Season" with the old name.

Against Game 7 of the World Series Friday Night Smackdown! was down another tenth to a 0.8 adults 18-49 rating. TBS' Tyler Perry's House of Payne drew a 0.6  adults 18-49 rating for each of its two half hours, that's up 0.2 and 0.1 respectively from last week's airings.

Syfy's Sanctuary was up down 0.2 from last week to a 0.3 adults 18-49 rating at 10pm.

Not in the table below, but up against Game 7 of the World Series Starz' Boss had 391,000 viewers at 10pm, down from last week's premiere that drew 659,000 viewers at 1opm. While I scoff at the notion that Live+SD numbers aren't great indicators for broadcast networks and most basic cable channels, I buy the notion for premium cable channels who are only concerned with happy subscribers and getting more of them. Last week Boss  had 1.7 million viewers in all its weekend airings, which surged to 3 million viewers in Live+3 viewing. This week its weekend viewings had 1.1 million viewers, and if it grows over 2 million in the L+3, I'm guessing Starz will be happy with the numbers. Boss has already been renewed for a second season.

We only receive the top 100 cable shows for adults 25-54 for the whole day from our primary source. If you don’t see an original episode of a show here, it’s because it wasn’t in the top 100. I attempt to filter out repeats, kids shows, and most non-primetime shows. Will add extras that I see later.

  1. Colin

Cancel Sanctuary already, nobody needs this and nobody watches it.

  2. ericK

wow colin, what crawled up your ass? most shows were down because of baseball, even wwe. what nobody needs is someone like you.

  3. Steffi

Sanctuary is great and sure the rating will increase next ep.

  4. The End

Looks like Sanctuary is done for, the WWE ratings arent that far off what it usually gets, and Haven did better in that slot too even with a reduced number of viewers on that network for that night.

  5. Kaylie

Jessie is just doing too well. Disney overall did good. I expected a little higher for the Wizards special. Numbers should be alot better for next weeks amazing episode.

  6. destris

CRAVE, CRAVE, CRAVE! Best show on TV! Check it out!

  7. Colin

eric, im not interested in talking to little fanboys who cant face the reality. Sanctuary has 0.3, thats ridiculous and nothing else.

  8. cimmer

Well Sanctuary usually draws around a 0.5. We could blame it on baseball (but that didn’t seem to hurt Grimm or Supernatural) or it could be that the storyline has just lost a lot of folk. I think Syfy will be winding down with Sanctuary soon though.

  9. Jimmy

halloween weekend and baseball hurt sanctuary.

  10. Steffi

In season 3 Sanctuary had 0.3 and even 0.2 Demo too and it got a fourth season.

  11. Steffi

So first research and then talk crap.

  12. ericK

cimmer what do you windling down? many think it was because of baseball, other networks didn’t air their shows because of it.

  13. The End

    @Steffi

Sanctuary got renewed during its first 10 episodes where it scored a 0.5 and got more viewers, basically once it was moved it didnt really matter what it got as it was renewed so your figures don’t actually mean anything, fact remains its a show thats been on for years now and likely won’t get renewed because it costs more than the generic ghost shows that get more viewers/high demo for less money.

  14. Steffi

@The End We are only at ep 4, so I think it´s a little bit too early to say the show is done. Season 3 was renewed after 10 eps so we have 5 or 6 more eps, hopefully with good ratings and demo.

  15. cimmer

@ericK, I think Syfy is going to let Sanctuary know that this will be it for it and give it a chance to wrap up story lines. It’s been the little show that could for Syfy, along with Eureka and I know it’s pretty cheap with the green screen but I also don’t think it has the oomph it used to.

Look at Grimm’s ratings and Supernatural – both new for the evening and on before Sanctuary and even though I don’t believe wrestling helps whatever shows come after it, it’s not good to have that much of a drop. It’s actually kind of odd. I was betting Sanctuary would stay at 0.5, like Haven, for it’s run but I was still thinking Syfy may be wrapping it up soon.

Sanctuary has been shaking up its story line in attempt to shake up its ratings, I believe, and it’s not working. It’s all relative but Syfy specifically moved it back to Friday nights in order to get that old ‘magic’ back. It didn’t quite work but it didn’t die either but that’s why I think that the ratings it’s had so far along with a dip like this may hasten its end. I do think Syfy will give it a chance to go out with grace though. (Personally, I think it would make a great show to turn into a couple of made for Syfy movies or a couple of specials at least.)

  16. Rob

Disastrous showing for Boss, down nearly 50% from premiere. Sure the World Series has an impact but these are terrible numbers, compared to other Starz Originals this year which didn’t get renewed (and which didn’t star a marquee name like Kelsey Grammer). Has Starz misconceived how hard it is to attract and keep viewers.

  17. Jon

Thundercats returned on par with what it was getting before its hiatus and it was up against Baseball so it’s a decent result, it retained the bulk of the Clone Wars audience and demos.

  18. Richard Steven Hack

I think Sanctuary might regain its ratings back up to .5. One week’s drop doesn’t a trend make especially given all the other shows on plus baseball. If it continues at .3, though, I’d say it probably won’t be renewed.

I was surprised to see Dr. Helen Magnus is bi in Friday’s episode! Wouldn’t mind seeing more of that! :-)

They appear to have dumped Agam Darshi as she no longer appears in the credits or the picture of the main characters shown during the credits. She apparently was “banished” to Hollow Earth.

They need to bring back Ashley Magnus by any means necessary. Zimmerman’s FBI girlfriend is cute, but no comparison. I’d kind of like to see them get rid of her, she’s a pointless distraction.

They also need to bring back Heyerdahl as Druitt as well as Tesla. Those are always the best episodes with those characters, along with Peter Wingfield as Watson.

I like the new story line of being independent from governments, but they need to take that somewhere. Last week’s episode was a pretty good spin off from that story line but Zimmerman and his FBI girlfriend’s little adventure ruined the pace of the story.

  19. baby_vicious_loves_fringe

the problem is that Amanda Tapping looks like really believes that she is Helen Magnus, all female character “b(v)anished” from the series appears to make a shadow on “magnificent” Amanda, and take out of series by Heil Amanda. Just a theory. :)

  20. Monkey

I was surprised to see the .3 for sanctuary. While it’s no season 1, season 4 has been leaps and bounds better than last season. Hopefully, this week was just a fluke. Now that V got cancelled, I wish they would bring back Sam Egan.

    @ Richard Steven Hack

Agam Darshi supposedly had scheduling conflicts with much of the season 4 shooting schedule but they say she does appear later in the season. Personally, I wasn’t sorry to see her go. They seem to have problems creating a solid female lead that isn’t played by Amanda Tapping (although Magnus’ new girlfriend has some potential).

I agree with you that Will’s FBI girlfriend needs to go. I don’t think she’s at all cute just super annoying and I don’t think the fact that Will starts acting like a horny teenager whenever he gets a girlfriend adds anything to the show.
