The clock may start ticking again on Fox. I’ve learned that the network is looking to bring back its signature real-time drama 24 as a limited series. Kiefer Sutherland is in talks to reprise his Emmy-winning role as Agent Jack Bauer. No deals are in place, but Fox is eying 24 as part of its recent push in limited event series. Since 24 ended its eight-season run on Fox in 2010, there have been efforts to continue the story as a feature, which ultimately didn’t take off. I hear the idea to do another 24 chapter on TV came from longtime 24 showrunner Howard Gordon, now executive producer on Showtime’s Homeland. I hear he pitched the plan, which would start from scratch with a new story arc, to 24 producers 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine TV as well as Fox, which all jumped on board. Gordon will likely executive produce through his 20th TV-based company Teakwood Lane. In addition to Homeland, Gordon executive produces the newly picked up TNT series Legends and high-profile FX pilot Tyrant, which is being directed by Ang Lee. Sutherland most recently starred on the Fox/20th TV drama Touch, which is being cancelled after two seasons. The original 24 was created by Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran, who executive produced with Gordon, Brian Grazer, Sutherland, Evan Katz and Tony Krantz. At the 2006 Emmys, the show won five Emmys, including best drama series and best actor in a drama series for Sutherland.
UPDATE: Former 24 executive producer David Fury said on Twitter that he also is involved in the reboot. “I’m pulling double duty along with Tyrant,” he wrote.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.
That’s a great idea. I love how the rules of TV have completely changed in the last 10 years with Family Guy, Arrested Development, The Tonight Show, Veronica Mars, and all kinds of other wacky things that keep happening. Exciting times!
I would give anything in the world if this were true.
every now and then I still look at my husband and cry out “I miss Jackkkkkkk”..boo hoo we always laugh but both of us can’t get over how awesome 24 was. There is nothing like it.
It’s really looking good for Jack Bauer!
Would just LOVE to have Jack back and 24! Pretty sure I’m not the only one who has gone through a 24 addiction and withdrawal! Oh pleeease give us all more fixes of 24!!! After all, it’s good, clean, mind and emotion stimulating! Can’t you see we’re all desperate??? No, seriously, would love, LOVE…LOVE…JACK to return!!
You mean I’m not alone?! I got goosebumps when someone told me this! I pine away for Jack and can’t seem to get over it. I found this show just last year and it took me only 4 months to watch all 8 seasons. I’m trying to resist starting all over. Pathetic but true! I love you, Jack!!
That’s ok. I started 24 back in ’06 and eventually caught up to where it was on FOX back when it aired. Loved the show so much, I started a re-watch of it back in March (I’m in season 4 now.) Such an addictive show. Very easy to binge-watch several episodes at a time.
Dontcha feel bad! I have been watching my DVD’s over and over! It’s so pathetic! But if jack comes back….!
Hope the plot of the new show is based on neutralizing or eliminating a worthless, dirtbag, Socialist/Marxist President who is trying the undermine the United States andenhancing the radical Muslim enemies of the nation. Once Jack finds that he’s not entitled to be President because of his foreign birth, he and the team get the wheels moving to get him out of the Oval Office because the Secret Service and Congress won’t execute their Constitutional Duties.
We love Jack and want him back, but this suggestion is too real to fly in Hollywood. If they would just this suggestion, I’d watch and everyone I know would watch, AND support the sponsors.
Could be the highest rated series ever!
My name is Ratt Stone, and I approve of this message.
Loved the first four seasons, then the story line turned- the last few seasons were so politically correct we couldn’t stand it. We actually stopped watching after the first few episodes of the last season. We were shocked that we could just walk away. Whereas the earlier seasons left us thinking, “How can we wait until next week?”, the latter ones were altogether predictable and so “PC” that we clicked off.
Great story line. I would like to see this one too!
I couldn’t agree more! Best show in the history of television…by far!!
Yes there is something as good as 24, it’s “Flashpoint”. Now on reruns on ION TV. All the intensity of 24, real life scenarios and gr8 acting too.
Great idea!!!! Taken off only because of the PC people. Go Keifer!!!!
Yah I agree, let not have Jack feeding people in Africa, or defending the united nations. Get back to basics…Good ol 24…Go after the terrorists.
Lets make the new PC Politically Conservative
It’s ok to love your country AND defend it from enemies both domestic and foriegn.
Go get’em Jack Bauer!
No… it wasn’t.
Maybe not taken off, but definitely influenced…by generals complaining that whenever they trained West Point cadets on the laws against torture some student would invariably smirk “Why not? Jack Bauer does!” to a room full of laughter.
How else do you think that senate investigation ended up in the season opener of…what was it, season 7?
That would be wonderful but it would have to be AS good or better than original!
Better? Tough task!
Fox is really out of touch on this. Nobody but nobody wants to save this president(Barrack Hussein Obama) from the terrorists! Hell, everyone I know wants this walking, talking impostor of an American man impeached!
DAMN IT !!
We would love to watch 24 again. That is our favorite tv show ever. Hopefully it will return.
That was quick, I knew Sutherland would begin talking 24 soon, but not this soon or as a limited series, but yay!!
When Joel Surnow left 24 it went downhill and got sappy. Producers cater to fans and stray from their original foundation. If they can get 24 back to the original concept it will be successful.
Holy s***
I am literally screaming right now
Me too!!!!
Kiefer gotta eat
Good because paychecks are starting to bounce over here.
Good one!
Please, no!
Holy shit this is incredible. There is nothing on network TV as good was 24 was. NOTHING!
oh yes – The Shield starring Michael Chiklis as Vic Mackey.
FX is Cable
Agreed, best two shows in the past decade easily.
Ha! I’m literally in the middle of Season 7 Episode 10 of “The Shield” and was thinking what an amazing team Vic and Jack would make.
Nothing on network television as good as ’24′ you say? Uh, how about ‘Person of Interest’… only the best show on telly right now, network or cable, and proof you don’t need offensice content to make good drama to boot!
This is NOT good news, and I say that as a die-hard ’24′ fan since 2006, this effectively rings the death knell for the ’24′ movie, of which there is a reportedly fantastic and finished script ready to go, if only F**cking FOX would give it the money needed to do it right and greenlight the thing!
I so hope the 12-episode (acording to David Fury) arc is plotted out in advance, looks more like a television movie in production quality, and gives Jack the proper and fitting send-off he so richly deserves. I’d rather have the movie, but beggars can’t be choosers and I’ll take a half-season of ’24′ over no ’24′ at all… but it didn’t have to be this way!
I am VERY excited. 24 shouldn’t be a short film, it must be a series. Though, what bothers me is why not just make one final full season that would tell the story that the 24 film trilogy was planning? This “starting from scratch” worries me. It should continue the story that concluded in Day 8. It doesn’t have to start from there, but it should be a continuation like any other 24 season.
Limited or full series (season) is infinitely better than a short 2 hour film.
David Fury says 12 episodes, but I really hope they are 2 hour episodes (90 minutes to be exact).
I kinda like your idea of getting two hours of the show instead of one in one evening. But I wonder how much more exhausted I will be after 2 hours of adrenaline rush vs 1!!!!!
You lost all credibility by saying Person of Interest is the best show on TV. I watch PoI, but is it the best show? Not by a longshot.
Completely disagree. I watched maybe 4-6 episodes of Person of Interest….Gave up because it was totally predictable. Plus the only real person of interest was the older actor with the limp. Kind of like now…watching Revolution…The first few episodes were fabulous…then became predictable…kind of getting interesting again- but would not miss it if it went off the air.
lol wut?
Absolutely didn’t expect to see this, although I was expecting news on the 24 movie to pop up in the next few days given Touch’s cancellation…
yes…bring it back….jack is the man
Beyond excited. Amazing show. Stunning news!
WHAT?!?! WOW!
Does this have something to do with Fox not bringing back TOUCH?
No–it has to do with FOX going downhill fast….and doing that republican recycling thing even when it makes no sense whatsoever.
“24″ was supposed to be 24 hours in the day of agents hunting terrorists….the 24 hour period passed, so it should be OVER.
What will they call it? “Another 24″? Stupid, and just one more example of FOX grasping at straws.
Loretta,
“Fox going downhill”? “Republican recycling thing..?”
Please explain…
THIS IS THE BEST NEWS ALL YEAR!!! IT WILL ONLY GET BETTER
That’s it. Between this, the possible revival of Heroes, a renewal for The Carrie Diaries, and only six episodes for Nikita, I don’t understand television anymore. I’m done. Next ABC will announce a mini-series of Lost.
Stop tempting me with getting excited about a mini-series of LOST!
There’s only so much i can handle today…..
Are you serious? Once again, yes the first 3-6 episodes of lost were sort of interesting…but then became idiotic.
THIS. LOST. That would be amazing! They could all still be sitting in that church… waiting… flashforwarding to heaven or hell! YES.
I’d watch it.
Dang, FOX. Give Touch fans some time to mourn. hahaha
There were Touch fans? lol
It’s about time.
This was and still can be one of the best scripted dramas in the history of broadcast television.
The story lines were timely and thought provoking and mirrored relevant current events and public policies. They addressed societal and political responses to things we never thought would happen but did in fact hapen in the real world and which events overshadowed the main story line throughiut seven of the eight years of the series.
It will be a great moment for fans and akll viewers if this show returns with invigorated scripts after a couple of dismal TV seasons where it went missing.
Exactly.
And let’s not forget that “24″ foreshadowed the election of the first black President of the United States!
And, have you noticed how, since “24″, other shows have copied that plotline?
Let’s hope history doesn’t follow 24 any further than electing a black president… what a hellscape that would be!
Like a nuclear explosion in Valencia?
I tried to ignore this disgusting fact while watching the show. The saving grace was that most of the mudflaps got snuffed by the end of each season.
Just not the real one, Bob. Sorry about that. Now, back to your bunker. The end times are upon us.
Having a black president isn’t exactly a plot line and movies have featured black presidents before anyway.
Season 6 was one of the worst seasons of television I’ve seen. Season 7 was better, but still lacked the original “click” from the previous seasons. If they can start from scratch (and PLEASE pretend Kim DOESN’T EXIST. AT ALL.) then there’s hope for television yet!
Even 24′s ‘worst’ season was better than most show’s ‘best’ years
Lol… no.
Yes. Very true.
I’d much rather watch another annoying Kim sub-plot than have anything to do with most other network dramas.
Worst season? Which one. They all rocked! Especially the last 2.
So true. 24 season 6 was the worst thing that ever happened to television, closely followed by Dexter season 6.
The end of season 8 was pretty terrible also. So many out-of-character plot twists and contrivances. It was a good, merited cancellation at the time, but if they’re feeling re-invigorated now, it’s worth a shot.
Funny, I just finished watching Dexter S6 (it took me a while to get the courage to watch, as S5 made me almost lose the will to live) and it was pretty bad. I’m not sure which was worse; Julia Stiles chewing the scenery, or Colin Hanks bumbling through scenes and almost vanishing whenever he shared the screen with Edward James Olmos?
Nothing can top S4 of Dexter, and nothing can top S3 of 24 in my opinion.
Dexter and 24 are quite similar in that each show will have lasted 8 seasons(although that could change soon with 24), each show peaked about halfway through their run(Dexter with Season 4, 24 with Season 5), each had by far their worst seasons in their 6th year, and IMO at least each show managed to bounce back in their 7th season.
And of course each show featured Geoff Pierson as an authority figure who’s unafraid to get his hands dirty.
Awww shucks Michelle….. And here I was hoping they could incorporate a flashback of one of the epic moments in Tv drama, namely “Kim and the mountain lion” sequence from season one…lol.
J/K Great news if they bring the show back, so long as Jack isn’t recruited to fight Global Warming or something equally stupid.
If they bring back Kim (or Audry) I have my caged cougar ready for release.
Run Kim, Run!!!
LOL! That was my reaction to the first season of 24. The entire season was Jack trying to rescue his idiot of a daughter and his inane, insipid wife. I kept rooting through out the show they would both be killed. 24 did not get interesting until season 2.
Yes, yes, yes. Insightful analysis. I can’t wait!
OMG! Yessssss!!!!!!!
This would be amazing! Nothing compares to 24, not even Homeland.
YES. Please get this done. 13 episodes and a movie!
I can’t help thinking this is something someone said to Kiefer as they apologized for canceling Touch.
Holy fucking shit.
Very thoughtful comment. You had to dig deep in that cranium to come up with that.
If this is what ruffles your feathers in a comments section, your must be a very miserable person.
Awesome news!!! Been missing “Jack” for the longest time… 24 has been the greatest tv series for me.
How does one do 24 as a limited series? They’d have to call it, like, 11.
They can just all it “The Jack Bauer Show”.
I guess they are finally just going to let Jack do it his way, so he’ll save the world in about 8 episodes.
I always wondered how this would be handled if the promised feature film had ever happened. The only way to do it any justice would be to [finally] remove the “real-time” aspect; it has always added unnecessary fluff to the series and drawn too much attention to weak moments in the script or plot when things don’t line up perfectly.
This is awesome news.
My only question: If it’s a limited series, does that mean the title will change to “12″?
Nope… it’ll still be 24 and begin with Kiefer’s VO:
Events occur in DOUBLE-TIME…
Haha well sort of. I assume each hour of the show’s broadcast will represent two hours of time in the “24 world”.
it’ll be a 1 episode, half-hour special called “24… minutes”
