MEP and Reform Party deputy chairwoman Kaja Kallas confirmed to ETV news broadcast "Aktuaalne kaamera" on Friday that she has accepted the invitation to run for chairwoman of the Reform Party.

"Yes, if we end up having elections, which it seems right now as though we will, then I will run," Kallas said, adding that many people in the Reform Party have already expressed their support for her candidacy.

"That we can head into the 2019 Riigikogu elections as a unified group," she continued. "It seems as though I could be one of the possible options for party leader."

When exactly the Reform Party might hold their internal elections, however, has not yet been determined. Current party chairman Hanno Pevkur had initially proposed holding the elections in January already, but later found that it would be better to hold them in February, ahead of Independence Day.

The Reform Party board will convene to discuss the matter on Dec. 20.

Pevkur has said he is ready to give up his position as party chairman so that the party, which has seen a great deal of infighting in recent months, could take on the 2019 Riigikogu elections as a unified team.

He has also stated that he supports Kaja Kallas as the next chairperson of the party, an opinion shared by a number of other influental Reform politicians.

Former Prime Minister and party chairman Andrus Ansip told ERR's radio news show "Uudis+" on Thursday that he saw several potential candidates for the position, but should Kallas end up being the only candidate, naturally she would have his support as well.

"If there should be others, I'd have to think about it, but in principle I think that Kaja Kallas would make a good leader of the Reform Party," Ansip said.
