Bronson, LaFrance to face runoff in race for Anchorage mayor following election certification

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Anchorage Assembly has certified the results of the April 2 municipal election at Tuesday’s regular meeting, setting in motion the next steps to determine who will be mayor.

With both incumbent Mayor Dave Bronson and challenger Suzanne LaFrance, the former Assembly chair, each earning approximately 36% of the vote, no clear winner emerged.

Certification of the election results is required before the municipal Elections department can publish a notice of the runoff election. The first day they can do that is Sunday, April 28.

The upcoming runoff election is set for May 14.

Runoff Election Important Dates

  • April 28 - First day a runoff notice can be published
  • April 30 - Runoff ballot packages mailed to qualified voters
  • May 7 - Anchorage Vote Centers open for early voting; also the last day to apply to receive a ballot at a temporary address or request a replacement ballot if a ballot package has been lost or damaged by5:00 p.m.
  • May 12 - Second notice of runoff election can be published
  • May 14 - Runoff election day
  • May 29 - Election commission meeting to adjudicate challenged ballots
  • May 31 - Certification of runoff election results at Special Assembly Meeting

During the initial election, a candidate could win by securing 45% of the vote plus one additional ballot. In the runoff election, candidates need to secure a majority of the vote.

In the 2021 mayoral runoff race, candidates Bronson and Forrest Dunbar, now a state representative, were separated by only 1,513 votes.

Voters can track ballots once cast at anchoragevotes.com. All ballots must be returned or postmarked by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
