Blue Peter - How to make a sock pumpkin for Halloween

Step 1:

Find a suitable sock, maybe you don't want to wear it anymore or you just like the colour of it for your pumpkin decoration! Make sure you've washed it before using it, you don't want to scare yourself with the smell! 🧦

Step 2:

Take your scissors and carefully cut the top off the sock, just above the ankle. ✂️

Step 3:

Start to fill your sock with rice until it's about half full. This will weigh your pumpkin down so that it won't go wandering off. Any dry grain will work, you could even use oats! 🌾

Step 4:

Fill the rest of the sock with chopped-up material, such as old t-shirts that you no longer wear. This will help thicken out the pumpkin and give it a nice shape. 🎃 

Step 5: 

Form your sock, filled with rice and material, into a ball shape. Place a stick in the middle of it, close the sock around it, and secure it by tying the string around the sock and the stick. 🧵

Step 6: 

This step requires a bit of dexterity. You're going to create the pumpkin segments by wrapping the string around your sock ball. Do this twice and ensure it's nice and tight to give your pumpkin proper definition. 💪

Step 7: 

Grab your decrations kit and customise your pumpkin however you like! Perhaps you could stick eight googly eyes and some pipe cleaners to yours to make a spider-pumpkin? Or simply draw a freaky face on it with some pens? 👀

This part is entirely up to you, feel free to do as you please with your pumpkin. We can't wait to see some of your designs!
