Seven easy and sustainable World Book Day costume ideas with CBBC

World Book Day isn't all about who has the fanciest costume, or who stands out the most, it's just a great time to talk about books, stories and authors. If you're not sure what to wear, or you just wish you could wear your 'normal' clothes - we’ve got you covered with seven super-simple outfits you’ll already have at home.

Addie from A Kind of Spark costume

Based on the book by Elle McNicoll, A Kind of Spark follows Addie as she explores the joys of friendship, sisterhood, the drama of growing up, mystery and magic.

To dress as lead character Addie, you could:

  1. Wear a white t-shirt, a pair of jeans and a key necklace.
  2. Wear some dungarees - a classic Addie look.
  3. Make it super easy and wear your school uniform, with extra points for plaited hair.

The Famous Five costume

Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five series has a few great adventurous characters to choose from. You could:

  1. Wear an orange top, jeans or cargo trousers and trainers to come as George.
  2. Do a shirt, shorts/trousers combo to come as either Dick or Julian.

Jamie Johnson costume

Are you a big football fan? Do you just wish you could wear your football kit? You could come as a character from Dan Freedman’s Jamie Johnson books. For an easy outfit, you could wear:

  1. Your football kit! Or you could wear yellow and red t-shirt and shorts to really look like a member of the team.
  2. A white t-shirt, some joggers and blue hoodie or zip-up, to look just like Jamie himself.

Malory Towers costume

Another Enid Blyton series, but this time it’s Malory Towers. Come as Darrell or any of the other students at the school by wearing:

  1. Your school uniform! - with extra points for a yellow touch, or a straw hat.
  2. A full yellow outfit with white socks and dark shoes.

Dodger costume

For a classic option, you could come as a character from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. We’d suggest you come as cheeky and savvy Dodger by wearing:

  1. A shirt, black trousers and dark jacket. Add a messy tie, a black hat and boots to really look the part.

Jack and Nancy from Quentin Blake's Box of Treasures costume

Are you ready to get blown away to a tropical island and enjoy lots of new adventures? Or would you like to come as a classic Quentin Blake character that’s a little unique? To come as Jack or Nancy from Quentin Blake’s Box of Treasures, you could wear:

  1. A blue top, pale trousers and bring a red umbrella, to look just like Jack.
  2. A full pink outfit and bring a red umbrella, to look just like Nancy.

Tracy Beaker costume

Or, you could come as an iconic character from CBBC - Tracy Beaker, from Jacqueline Wilson's series of books all about a feisty and kind-hearted girl in care. 

To put together an easy Tracy Beaker outfit, you could wear: 

  1. A red top, a pair of shorts and some trainers
  2. A stripy top, pair of jeans and lots of attitude!
