Women's football with Malory Towers

How has the popularity of women’s football changed over time?

During World War One, whilst men were away fighting, women in the UK were needed to work in factories. These factories started setting up their own women’s football teams, and women's football became extremely popular across the country.

One team stood out. Dick, Kerr Ladies FC. in Liverpool was so popular that on Boxing Day 1920, 68,000 people turned up at the stadium to watch their match.

When did the FA ban women’s football?

The FA banned women's football in 1921, claiming the game was quite unsuitable for females and ought to not be encouraged.

It wasn't until 50 years later, in 1971, when the ban was finally lifted, and women and girls were allowed to play again. It's hard to imagine now, especially with England's amazing win against Germany at the Euros in 2022.
