Trans artist headlines street art festival

A trans street artist has been named as the headliner for a festival that will see 75 murals painted in south Bristol.

Upfest is returning this summer for a 17 day event after it was cancelled in 2023.

Organisers said trans artist and activist, Mister Samo, will be "spraying messages of love" across the BS3 area from 17 May to 2 June.

The artist said: "I am so honoured to be the lead artist this year. It’s a real powerful statement for the team to put a trans artist at the forefront of the event during these times."

The Portsmouth based street artist will also be involved in Upfest's annual crowd funding and rewards scheme which supports the cost of the event.

Mister Samo has been painting since 2013, with a focus on intersectional gender identity and the community.

The artist's work can be seen globally, including a piece for World Pride 2019 in New York.

Festival co-founder Steve Hayles, said: “We fundamentally believe in the power of art to transcend boundaries and challenge perceptions.

"Having Mister Samo join as the headline artist for 2024 not only celebrates diversity, but amplifies the voices and stories of the community.

"It’s a true testament to one of our core beliefs: that inclusivity is at the heart of our organisation."

Upfest was started by a handful of artists painting together in a yard more than 15 years ago.

This year artists are being invited to paint large scale murals on buildings across Bedminster, Southville and the wider BS3 area.

"This is a new year for Upfest, with it being set across three weekends, and it's a real chance for the entire community to come together and get involved in the incredible programme," Mr Hayles said.
