Two children have been taken to hospital following a serious crash on the A9.

The three-vehicle accident happened north of Dalwhinnie at about 19:45 on Sunday and closed the trunk route in both directions for nine hours.

A 10-year-old girl was taken by air ambulance to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness - where her condition is described as critical but stable. A 12-year-old girl was also taken for treatment and later released.

The accident - which involved a white Citroen C4 Picasso, a white Renault Trafic van and a white Toyota Landcruiser - happened at the A899 junction for Dalwhinnie.

Both the injured children were passengers in the Picasso.

The 48-year-old driver of the van was arrested in connection with road traffic offences and released pending further inquiries.

A 38-year-old man, a passenger in the van, was also arrested on a warrant in connection with an outstanding matter.

Police Scotland is appealing for witnesses.
