Groundwork has started on the site of a multimillion-pound hotel.

The building, in Coatham, Redcar, will have 42 bedrooms over four floors, an outdoor eating terrace and a car park.

It is being built on the former Rkade skate park off Majuba Road, and could create up to 50 jobs once it opens.

Redcar and Cleveland Council cabinet member Lynn Pallister said the hotel was in a "great location" near the town centre, train station and Teesworks site.

North East-based Inn Collection Group, which operates 31 pubs and hotels, is managing the £6m project, although the capital cost is being funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) and the government’s Towns Fund.

After preparatory work is completed, construction work expected to get under way later in the year, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Ms Pallister said: “Coatham seafront has received a complete make over this past year, with leisure facilities on the seafront boosting tourism in the area, and we’ll soon be welcoming a big hotel chain to complement this."

The council, which is now led by Labour, previously drew up a masterplan for Coatham, aiming to regenerate the seafront along Majuba Road.
