Six guinea pigs have been found dead by the Halfway bus stop on Les Banques in St Sampson.

The GSPCA was called out to the "upsetting and distressing scene" at about 18:00 GMT on Monday.

When contacted by the BBC, Guernsey Police said officers were not yet aware of this incident.

A police spokesman said: "However, we would urge anyone with information relating to any animal abuse or neglect to report it to police."

The animal welfare charity said the animals were "very underweight" and showed signs of "long-term neglect".

Manager Steve Byrne said the charity was called out for all sorts of animal welfare concerns, but "it is rare for us to be called to a scene with deceased animals and even more so in a public place".

It has appealed for witnesses and said its team were concerned other animals could be at risk.

Mr Byrne said anyone with information can get in contact with the charity by calling 01481 257261 or emailing [email protected], external.
