The family of a Russian sailor who disappeared off the north west Highland coast have been told a body has been found.

Roman Titov, who is in his late fifties, was sailing solo when his yacht left Ullapool harbour on 13 December.

Debris from the boat washed ashore at Strathan Bay near Lochinver last month.

Police Scotland said a man's body was found on Tuesday at Achmelvich, near Lochinver.

Formal identification has still to take place, but police have informed Mr Titov's family of the discovery.

Police said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

Mr Titov had a narrow escape just over two years ago when his boat was badly damaged near Rockall while on a round-the-world solo trip,

He was able to sufficiently repair the boat to make it to safety in Ullapool.
