Survey reveals people want more from market

People have asked for more events and longer opening hours at a town's market.

Telford and Wrekin Council said 1,500 people responded to a survey it launched in January, asking for opinions about Wellington Market.

The local authority bought it in November and has carried out surveys to gauge the condition of the building.

The councillor responsible for the economy and neighbourhood services, Lee Carter, said the market had suffered from "years of under-investment".

The survey also found people were "supportive and positive" about the market and its traders and wanted to see it improve.

The people who responded said they wanted to see increased variety and improvements to the heating, toilets and automatic doors.

The events they suggested included food festivals, farmers markets, and late-night markets.

Improvements have already been made to the heating and the council said the survey would inform the next phase of the design process.

It said that, subject to planning approval, it could start the improvements this winter.
