Rainbow zebra crossings appear in resort

Rainbows have appeared on two zebra crossings in a seaside resort.

Two crossing points on Dickson Road in Blackpool have been upgraded to include the multi-coloured designs.

The makeovers come as the resort develops its ''Be Who You Want To Be' area, which aims to boost inclusivity and help regenerate the north of the town.

The colours reflect the Progress Pride flag, which has been the symbol of the LGBTQ+ community since the 1970s.

Blackpool Council said the new thermoplastic graphics "brightened up the area" in a show of "solidarity" with the long-established LGBQT+ community.

The council's ‘Be Who You Want To Be’ action plan was launched following a number of meetings and focus groups with community leaders.

Its aims are to show the area is somewhere people can be themselves, and to drive growth and investment

Cllr Lynn Williams, leader of Blackpool Council and ward councillor for Claremont said the crossings were an "an injection of colour" and a celebration of the area's diversity.

Tim Allan, chairman of the North Shore Business Group, said he hoped further investment in North Shore would make the area "safer and healthier".

Rainbow crossings will also be at the junction of Dickson Road and Springfield Road - a busy four-way junction.
