City centre bus stops to move for £43m scheme

Bus routes into Bradford city centre are being changed as part of a £43 million scheme to pedestrianise it.

Bradford Council wants to make it easier to use for people on foot or those on bicycles as well as creating more green spaces.

From Sunday Bank Street, Broadway, Market Street, Hall Ings and parts of Bridge Street and Little Horton Lane will all be closed to traffic.

Bus stops are being moved as well as routes changed with the scheme due to be completed by Spring 2025.

There will be new timetables and stops as a result of buses being rerouted onto the new public transport corridors being built around the city centre.

Staff from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority will be around on Sunday and throughout the next week to help bus passengers.

A city council spokesperson said: “Traffic free green spaces are being created to make the city centre a safer, easier and more pleasant place for people to spend time and to get around on foot or by bike.

"Unfortunately, disruption to both drivers and pedestrians is inevitable while works of this nature take place, but every effort is being made to minimise this wherever possible."

They thanked people for their "patience" during the work.

The work means the closure of a taxi rank and disabled parking bays on Bank Street.

Disabled parking on Norfolk Gardens will also be no longer available, with the nearest blue badge spaces on Aldermanbury and Pictureville.

The council and the WYCA are working together on the scheme through the Transforming Cities Fund programme due to be completed by Spring next year.

The funding is from the Department for Transport and ring-fenced and cannot be used to deliver day-to-day services.
