A new £45m housing development has been officially opened in Lewis.

The site at Goathill, Stornoway, includes a 52-bed care home, 50 flats for people with extra support needs and 74 affordable homes.

The project was proposed as a way to help tackle housing shortages in the Western Isles.

It was approved in 2018 and developed by local authority Comhaire nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Health and Social Care Partnership and the Hebridean Housing Partnership with Scottish government funding.

Scottish government ministers Maree Todd and Joe Fitzpatrick officially opened the development.

The 74 affordable homes are a mix of 16 shared equity with the remainder being for rent.

The properties include family and one bedroom accommodation.
