Zoo devastated after Sumatran tiger dies

A Staffordshire Zoo has announced "with very heavy hearts" the death of a Sumatran tiger.

Drayton Manor Zoo said 12-year-old Dora's heart stopped while she was recovering from a dental procedure.

The critically-endangered animal was born in Prague and arrived at the zoo in 2015.

"Her loss has left a void in our resort, and we're devastated," a spokesperson said.

"Dora wasn't just a tiger; she was family," they added.

Hundreds of visitors and former keepers shared their condolences, external in response to the zoo's social media announcement.

"The first big cat I had the pleasure of meeting and being a part of the team that cared for her. Such a beautiful girl. Will forever hold a special place in my heart," said one.

Another wrote: "So sad to hear this. She was so beautiful, we always felt lucky if we caught a glimpse of her. Thinking of all at Drayton Manor, she will definitely be missed."

The zoo said it would be honouring Dora's memory in the weeks to come.
