Fetty Wap reckons there's space for the likes of him and Jay-Z among rap's elite.

"I mean legends are going to be legends and new legends are going to be new legends, that's how I like to look at it," the 26- year-old rapper told Newsbeat.

He spoke to us backstage at Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park, north London.

"Jay-Z is Jay at the end of the day," Fetty added.

Fetty Wap's comments come just a week after Jay released his 4:44 album where he took verbal shots at some of rap's new school.

Lyrics on the album: "Y'all on the 'gram holdin' money to your ear, there's disconnect, we don't call that money over here."

The line is a clear pop at some of the new school of rap who regularly pose with bundles of cash to their ears.

A pose Fetty is well known for striking.

"I did something that no-one else did so can't really talk about it [new v old]," Fetty explained when asked about Jay-Z's comments.

Fetty is widely credited with making "trap music" popular. It's a sub-genre of rap.

Although some more traditional rap artists say it lacks the creativity and lyricism of the music that came before it.

They also say some new artists are more concerned with money and the flashy lifestyle than their craft.

Another US rapper on the bill this weekend is Post Malone, who opened the festival.

"I am always nervous as big as you get - you always feel nerves. So a quick drink normally straightens me out," Post laughed.

The rapper is best known for the song, White Iverson, and the fact he's best mates with Justin Bieber.

"Even Justin says the nerves never go away. Our relationship, it just clicked 'cos I'm a real guy and he's a real guy and we have fun.

More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the festival over the weekend. Fans have been told to expect longer queues with extra security in place given recent terror attacks in the UK.

Chance the Rapper, Skepta and Zara Larsson are some of the other artists on line-up.
