A green-fingered grandfather has become a local celebrity thanks to his so-called mushroom man creation.

Mick Bone, 78, from Westwood, Peterborough, said he was "surprised" to have received so much love after shaping his hawthorn bush for neighbours to enjoy over the last seven years.

The 3m-tall (9.8ft) hedge has been given eyes, a tongue and lights.

The giant shrub overlooks a street near Ravensthorpe Primary school.

The retired carpenter said he took inspiration from The Fitzwilliam Arms pub in nearby Marholm, which has a towering bush growing outside its front door, shaped like a man.

"I kept trimming it and it ended up as mushroom man and is looking its best now," said Mr Bone, who claimed the mushroom top was initially designed as a hat for his leafy landmark.

"When you see someone smile because of it, it's all worth it. Especially during such gloomy times."

In his spare time Mr Bones does litter picking and hangs up Christmas lights in the area.

"It makes us all proud of him," said June Bone, his wife.

Mr Bone, who worked as a joiner and carpenter, said he would give mushroom man a Santa hat this year.

"I had a little health scare in summer last year and underwent an operation to remove my kidney - it didn't deter me and I will continue with my community projects as long as I can," he finished.
